Yes -- my thoughts exactly. Two BD50's for a one-cour show.

Just confirmed with mp3dom, and Dynit’s Kill la Kill will be on par with the JP BD, though he suspects it will have better compression. So, it’s a matter of encoder that determines quality. I just wish FUNi would get better encoders, and use 2 BD50’s.

Speaking of, aren’t Madman’s BDs (of KLK) clones of Aniplex’s or Anime Limited’s?

Do you happen to know if there are forced subtitles or if the on-screen text is redone in Italian? The on-screen text is sometimes redone in Italian, for example the introduction of GITS SAC episode #1.

mp3dom:
We have never released discs with forced subtitles (if by "forced" you mean that you can't watch the show with japanese audio and no subtitles). You can always do the combination you want. The only title with forced subtitles was "Attack on Titan" due to a licensor's restriction. Other than this title, all the other ones have freely selectable streams. Regarding italian text that replaces the japanese, previously we made postproduction on the opening/ending and those part that refers to original postproduction... but it's been a while since we leave the video in its original form (as is) mainly due to the reduced time we have to do each job, so we prefer to spend that time in fixing problems (eventually) than to do italian post-production.
Hope that helps.

Meh. That doesn't look any better than the Funi set.

Agreed, the artwork on both is meh, the books don't sound much different and the price is the same (for those who can't do the conversion) Funi's extras are worthless but it's not like you're paying more for them.
I am very disappointed in both releases, I expected something better for such a highly anticipated show.

Not the best choice in design, but I wouldn't mind having the pillow cases.

I think AL's set looks better though the Funi set is pretty cool too (unless we get another giant LE set for part 2 like MHA) I will probably just stick with the US set for this one out of convenience.

I still like the artwork on the AL set way more than the goofiness of the characters on the Funimation box. Funi's box looks huge for Part 1, it's getting into Sentai PE territory - did Funi specifically designed that box to hold part 2 as well, after removing the accessories box? I would find the possibility of any forethought like that coming from Funimation anymore as a joke. The AL version has a slimmer box, larger book, digipak, and no DVDs. And if their storage box actually comes to fruition, that'll be another plus.

Considering that only the show's title is present on the spine of Funi's box, I'm assuming it's meant to house the entire series.

But what's up with the "grandma's tablecloth" pattern all over everything?

I'm really not down with labels using the best key art for the standard editions and then using spot illustrations/character art over some stock patterns for the LE, similar to Funimation's LE of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. I can understand trying to do something different for the LE, but use another piece of key art or have something new commissioned.

The costs, and approvals required for that isn't worth the hassle.

That's true in general, but not universally, and it is usually older shows or movies getting a new eleborate releases that they'll allocate enough resources for that.

That one is not a redone text encoded in the video. It's just a subtitle that you can switch on/off.
