Ah wait I misread my rip sizes, you're right in that it is around 5.1GB max, most are around 4.8-5. Even still it looks like they didn't mess with the brightness on this one, given how the source has serious issues I feel like not even Aniplex could have salvaged this one. Still outside of dark scenes it looks fantastic.

Aniplex would definitely have done better.

Most J.C Staff shows don't look great to begin with even the JP releases can look pretty bad sometimes.

With shoddy masters?

As far as I know they usually work with the good stuff because of Aniplex JP.

Yes, they would have done better than FUNi.

After comparing Viz's BD to my Japanese BD, once again Subatomic Digital prove that they always have to cock something up. As per usual the gamma is wrong yet again. Unlike Gargantia for example you get something that's somewhat watchable, but there's plenty of blocking, noticeable banding and noise that's not present in the Japanese BD. Given how Viz have dumped Justin as their only good encoder, this is what you're going to have to put up with as standard from them going forward.

Oh, and colour shifting too!

Does anyone know how the "Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic" UK Blu's compare to the aniplex dvd's?

Since the set 1 dvd is currently in limbo of maybe never being reprinted(A complete Blu release would be even better), so I figured i would ask about the UK counterpart.

Thumbs up

Some Spice and Wolf comparisons, and.... Censorship???

So I have FUNi's single BD for S&W season 1, and their LE for season 2, but recently imported Pony Canyon's 10th anniversary BD box re-release, which, for simplicity, I'm assuming has the same source audio and video for all S&W JP BDs since the single volume releases.

So, since I rip all my BDs to my Plex server, I've made the ambitious decision to remux the JP video together with the subs and Dub pulled from the FUNi BDs. Overall, I've done 3 episodes so far, and it's turning out awesome. Frame rates being the same, getting the Dub and Subs timed perfectly is pretty easy. While working this project, I've done a lot of quality comparisons, just by eyeballing. Now, I'm aware that FUNi never got the BD master for their season 1 BD release, but what I did not know was that S&W had been given some Broadcast-to-Disc lovin' with scene redraws... and that some of those redraws have significant... censorship..? added in.

I'm really thrown by this, and frankly, kinda frustrated as well... I find "barbie doll" anatomy in Anime to be absurd. The magic hair that always "hangs just right" can be ridiculous as well. Now, these two on their own are understandable for maintaining a specific "line" that will or will not be crossed in a given series/movie, I understand that. But Spice and Wolf used both, which I always thought was odd. Especially odd to me was that the nudity in S&W was never even really "fanservice", it was tasteful and appropriate for the story and it's presentation.

So, to find that in the redrawn scenes, the artists actually drew more magic hair just to cover the barbie doll anatomy feels kind of, I don't know, insulting? That's probably too strong... It just seems like a BD redraw would have been the right place to bring S&W's art up to the mature level of it's script.

Rant over. Your thoughts?

The only real changes like these that I've found so far are in episode 2. Ironically, I think, episode 1 doesn't have any changes like the above.

EDIT: The second image is actually a GIF. Is there a way to get it to play while embedded?
EDIT:: For now here's a link to view the GIF: https://1drv.ms/i/s!Ahhv095Pg_4Fqg6_4-H3WnTBhKAf

I actually noticed small things like that with various Funimation releases in the early part of this decade. They were fairly squeamish with nudity and you can tell that by what licenses they decided to acquire for North America. There must have been a change in management at some point, because Funimation started going after more and more risqué properties once Blu-ray became their primary format.

Although, I have yet to watch Spice and Wolf, I think it looks much more beautifully drawn especially with the better colors due to a better master.

Anyway, does anybody know any info on the video quality for Sound! Euphonium Collector's set? I really need to know if Pony Canyon USA used the same encodes as the Japanese counterpart or re-encoded just as good.

When somebody gets their Sailor Moon R: The Movie BD, could I get a report on the image quality? Yknow, grain removal aside.

Hi, I was going through the titles on sale at Sentai and was wondering if these titles are upscales:

Student Council's Discretion Season 1
Utawarerumono OVA
Needless
Psychic Detective Yakumo
Okamikakushi
Nyankoi!
MM!
Maria Holic
Maria Holic Alive
Hakuoki Season 1
Hakuoki Season 2 Record of the Jade Blood
Motto To Love Ru
Queen's Blade Beautiful Warriors

They were produced between 2009 & 2010, when some anime was still being produced in SD. I've been trying to search for the info, but have not been able to find out. Any help will be appreciated, Thanks!

All of these except for Motto! To Love-ru are native HD.

EDIT: Motto is also native HD. My mistake.

Thank you!

Would you also know if there's a site that states what Sentai Blu-rays are upscales?

My first suggestion is looking these shows up on the site. A number of them have reviews with screenshots, and upscales are relatively easy to spot at a glance (generally softer linework, aliasing and banding will be most prevalent; also keep an eye out for smudged lineart in the poorer upscales such as FLCL). Sentai's upscales are also generally 1080i as opposed to 1080p. Aside from that, it's difficult to say.

Also, small ammendment to my previous post, Motto! To Love-ru is actually native HD, it's the original season that is upscaled. Sorry for the confusion. I'll correct it now.

Not all upscaled are bad. Gurren Lagann is an upscale but looks good (though a bit expensive). But yeah, it will never match true HD resolution.

Gurren Lagann is NOT an upscale, it is a recomposite. That's very different, and why it could easily pass for real high definition.

The best upscales I've seen are Mai-Hime and Otome. FUNi's own FMP upscale is great, too. If only we could get it without the colour conversion/brightness issues it surely has.
