In my professional opinion, you are either involving your bias in issues which do not involve or concern you...or wish that those who participate cannot stray to a meaningful topic which involves the thread we are discussing.

It’s no longer possible to plan purchases in Blu-ray for the year as I can’t be sure what will get releases and what will go exclusive.

In this case, I believe mredman is correct to be concerned. I see AHS may not get a release on Blu-ray this year in the US. For anyone who owns all previous seasons, it’s a major major pisser. It maybe that this years AHS Cult will be the last season released in ANY country. As much as I would love Castle Rock on Blu-ray, if it goes to beyind two seasons, there is every chance it may just be available digitally via subscription service or Digital HD. It’s sad times, as quality takes a back seat with such services. As ever though, the masses are more than happy to sacrifice such crisp visual AV quality just so they can sit on their arses and not get up to pop a disc in.

I'm telling you as I've seen this business from the bottom floor on up, companies will do what they want, they sell for a PROFIT, they are in the business to make money. And the bottom line is its easier, cheaper and less risk to take a single movie or show, and stream it via subscription...then to assume or guess how many copies of a title to make, burn it on disc, and sell it in retail.
The guilty parties in this were 5-6 or maybe more years ago, when Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Amazon, all buy these in huge bulk quantities to try to outsell the other......only to get credit back for what doesn't sell. PC games on disc were the first to go, Walmart hasn't sold games in store in ages. STEAM is the big market there. Then CD's went away because of iTunes. Take your pick at what's next, BD's or console gaming.....but it's happening. The youth are being weaned on this. Its becoming a habit for them.
Now, I fully understand you live in England, I have no clue what the internet there is like. I admit that. But, I've been to Japan and they mostly have high-speed internet there.....America is getting it slowly. Supposedly this fall a company is beta-testing an over-the-air broadband service in select cities. This could be a huge game changer in the states. Cable, since they cannot expand their infrastructure to compete with 4K, are concentrating on improving their internet delivery service.
Why the internet is so important is because of streaming. It will be everywhere in time.....I just have that feeling. The quality you get streaming is directly associated with the speed of your internet. For me, I have Apple TV and I see absolutely NO difference in how a 4K movie looks streamed compared to its UHD blu ray....except the close-captioning is faster on streaming, the words show before the actor speaks the line sometimes. As far as picture quality, I see no discernible difference, I know what to look for.

WE haven't ditched disc, BD, CD or ROM's, the company's have. Unfortunately we in western civilization will buy anything that is "new" and "exciting"...even if that means switching mediums...which I've been in that boat as well. My original Beatle records are hung, framed and on the wall (American Capitol releases, so they are "edited"). Yet I've gone from 8-track, to cassette, to CD, to WMA, to mp3...and while there are enthusiasts who salivate over having vinyl, none of them can argue the fact that digital sounds better, is more portable and makes perfect copies without degradation over time. No "quality" was sacrificed!
Digital delivery worldwide may not be perfect today....and it may not be in my lifetime. Subscription streaming will be initially anyway, the business model to follow, where it goes beyond there is anyone's guess. And at least for me, the quality is at the very least equal to what I see on disc. That likely has more to do with my internet speed as it is really fast. Speeds above 25mbps are needed to stream HD, and 50mbps to stream 4K.

Vinyl-Records, subject to warp, scratches, pops due to oil from hands, surface dust and dirt. The initial play is the best. Friction of the needle on the grooves wears the track. Quality stuff will reduce the degradation factor, and your records could last years with meticulous care. But you cannot beat physics, the sound of a record degrades with each play. Digital doesn't. Its first play sounds the same as its 10,000 play...with no degradation. You may PREFER the sounds of records over digital, that's your preference. But by any measurable standards, proper digital mastering beats vinyl 100-0.

Internet speeds have a direct bearing on the quality of streaming. Currently I'm paying for 400mbps, but on a scale it does vary from 317mbps to over 500mbps at times...in short, I'm getting what I pay for. I've calibrated 4K TV's for an assortment of customers. The stated speeds I mentioned are due to MY experience, not on stated by manufacturer specifications. I believe the speeds you mentioned are minimum requirements. It will work, but you will have intermittent interruptions, buffering, digital artifacts. My numbers are based on what I've seen in the field. They work for me, they work for my customers, I stand by them. I have customers with DSL from Verizon, their speed is 6mbps, tops. The next option for most of them is the lowest Comcast cable tier which is 15mbps. I've had customers at this tier and they tell me it buffers. Referencing Comcasts site, they state it is for a single device....which means if its streaming something, someone cannot be using the PC or a phone, or a ps4, or anything else.....well, except for a few, most of my customers are families, this doesn't work for them. The next tier is 60mbps. Good for 2-5 devices. I'd say half of my customers use this tier and most are happy with it. A young couple with a child, this is ideal for them. They can stream, use their phones, and be on the PC if they want to. The next higher tier is 150mbps. This is the 2nd most popular preference of my customers. Perfect for a family of four or five.

Now for my equipment. I have a CM1000 Netgear cable modem which when I got it several months ago was the only one that was DOCSIS 3.1, and is good for speeds up to 1Gbps. I have an ASUS RM-AC5300 wireless router, but all the connections I have to my stuff are wired. My PC,printer, PS4 & Apple TV are all wired to the router. My TV, Oppo 203 and phone all connect wirelessly. With my business I buy cables in bulk. All my wired connections are using CAT-7 ethernet cables. All my HDMI cables are high-speed. But as luck would have it, I got confirmation yesterday that a sample of UHS HDMI, with the new 2.1 connectors will be shipping Monday, so I may swap a few of my cables to see if it makes any improvement. I have an Apple TV 4K 64GB box. It definitely has a superior picture to the Roku Ultra I had before. The Roku is now downstairs. My TV is probably dated, I have a SONY 800D 49". Which I think is around 3 yrs old? I have customers with LG OLED's but despite the great looking picture 5 out of the 6 have screen burn-in problems and LG won't stand behind them. You can't have CNN or ESPN on all day their ticker burns in at the bottom of the screen.

When I watch a 4K movie on Apple TV, I cannot see any difference between that picture and one produced by my Oppo. Believe me, I looked! Anything on HD the Apple box automatically upconverts to a 4K picture. This is adjustable in the settings. Now I was not happy with the Roku, because the picture didn't look as good as the Apple, but I was at 150mbps speed at the time...I'm guessing that has a lot to do with it.

BTW, the Ultra 4K channel, sponsored by Sony, does a internet check prior to you ordering a movie. If it does not register above 25mbps, you cannot order a movie.

Beyond Steedeel's initial post, nothing else posted pertained to Castle Rock. As I indicated in my post, that discussion was more appropriate to this thread. When people go into a thread specific to an active TV show they do not need to be presented with walls of text that have a tenuous, if any, connection to the thread topic. People don't want an inventory of your HT or the history of your media consumption.

I have no horse is this race; I stream and I buy a lot of physical media too, so don't accuse me of bias. If posts don't belong in a thread, they don't belong there - it's as simple as that.

There's been a great deal of off topic chat in this thread, and we've let that slide due to this section of the forum seeing a lot less foot traffic than the movie or TV section. However off topic discussion or derailing gets reported very readily and that does mean threads will be moderated to keep them within the realms of the topic at hand.

If you wish to leave the site, just leave. We don't close or delete accounts.

Well here in the UK, the boutique labels like Arrow, Eureka and Powerhouse/Indicator do release quite a lot of their titles with both discs (not in every case though), but generally speaking the more recent Hollywood releases are just single discs. I'm assuming they issue DVD's as well, but just not in the same package.

From memory, I think all my Hammer blu-ray releases by Studio Canal are also combo packs, and to be honest I'd rather they lowered the cost a little and just supplied the blu-ray by itself seeing as many of their titles have already been available on DVD for many years now.

Oh man, that is large metro compared to my local Pisgah Forest NC with a population of 7,300. The local Walmart (small store) has just added their first UHD Blu-ray titles (about 7). Also added, a Samsung UHD Blu-ray player. Very interesting for a small town out in the sticks .

Eh, yes and no. This is something that hasn’t been talked about in quite some time, but it is unfortunate they are no longer including sets. Having just done a cross country trip from Washington State I can tell you not all hotel-motels have BD players. Hell, I failed convincing the owner of the Airbnb to upgrade his living room to one despite having a HDTV. Anyway, my point is, both DVD’s and digital are a viable option when away from home.

Ironically, DVDs can look very good on 4K TVs; appreciation for them might increase. Some of my DVDs genuinely surprise me. My 4K TV and/or 4K disc player have given DVDs a new lease on life as far as I am concerned. I will not be parting with my DVD collection.

OK, kind of caught up on the thread. Here’s my personal experiences with streaming. I’ve never had an issue with wireless, Netflix, VUDU, Prime or any other streaming service outside of Hulu. Although the buffering issues I had there could have been the Sony BD players app and not the actual service.

Since, like here, my friends haven’t shared the same experience as I. Of course now I’m in a new area and trying to find the time and energy to watch sim outside of old episodes of Match Game 73 on YouTube

Totally. Lots of 4K television and players upscale nicely. I’ve still got my DVD and my 9 year old still picks an occasional movie on the skinny in that format. I meant to ask you how you watched The Sasquatch Gang on Prime. Was it the one through Prime membership or a rental. As someone else mentioned, the quality varies on Prime. It doesn’t help they tend to hide their UHD movies and shows in a poorly laid out menu. Which there’s no excuse for giving they are based out of Seattle.

I recently had a similar experience...

To preface this (some of this I may have mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but just for context)... I don't have a 4K TV yet, and it will probably be a few years before I upgrade our main TV (paid a lot for one of the last high-end Samsung Plasmas just a few years ago before they were discontinued). But I've been buying 4K combo packs since the format launched since they typically come with the regular Blu-Ray anyway.

Then earlier this year the Blu-Ray player that we use with that TV died. I replaced it with the Panasonic - DMP-UB900. The normal price was $600, but it was on sale for about $450.

I opted for it for a couple of reasons. I figured if I was going to buy a new player anyway, I may as well just get a 4K player. While it was more than I would have preferred to pay, I opted for it because of the players available at the start of this year, this has the most robust options of adjust the look of HDR colors when using 4K discs with a 1080p TV, which I figured I would dabble in since I already had many discs anyway. It is also just a nice, higher end, very sturdy and well built player.

I've had mixed results with using 4K discs on my TV, to the point that I generally just opt to watch the regular Blu-Ray. But this 4K player does a great job of making those regular Blu-Rays look better than any regular Blu-Ray player or Blu-Ray compatible game system that we had used before. Even my wife, who is not as apt to notice these things, saw the difference the first time we watched a movie on it.

So now fast forward to a couple of weeks ago or so. Up to that point, we really hadn't watched any DVDs on it. And that wasn't out of specific avoidance or anything, we just hadn't pulled out any movies that we only had on DVD and not Blu-Ray in the time that we've had the player.

But my wife, who works in a library that checks out movies (mainly on DVD), brought home the movie Downsizing, as we were both interested in seeing it and hadn't previously (with regards to the movie itself - I had considered blind buying it at one point as we never got around to seeing it in the theater, but opted not to - after seeing the movie, I'm glad that I didn't buy it. Neither of us cared for the movie, itself ).

But our lack of enjoyment of the movie itself aside, something that I noticed was how relatively good the upscaled DVD image was on the TV. By no means was it as good as a regular Blu-Ray, let alone a 4K disc, but it did a pretty damn good job all things considered of making the picture look as good as it can.

With our previous player (the one the one that died), when we would watch a DVD on it from time to time, even of a relatively recent movie or TV show that was otherwise as good of a transfer as you could get on the disc, the picture still looked very soft overall and for lack of a better way of putting it, I could "tell" that it was a DVD just by the look of it.

When we watched downsizing, the picture was good enough that if I didn't know better and had just walked in the room with it on, I would assume it was a cable station, on demand, through Netflix, or something along those lines. It wasn't a "wow!" picture, but it was much better than I would have previously expected a DVD to be able to look on our current 64" TV.

I take my Roku with me wherever I go and have never had problems.

I would never travel with DVDs personally even if I had them. Or blus for that matter.

I streamed The Sasquatch Gang as part of my Prime membership. I have never paid to rent a singular movie title through Amazon video, or with any other online source.

Except for the four annoying instances of image degradation, it looked pretty good. Every time the image deteriorated into runny water colors, however, I was taken right of the movie and that is what made the experience unacceptable.

I have had problems with Amazon Prime streaming over both my wireless and my wired network.

Netflix has offered a much more stable experience when I have had it. I cyclically subscribe to them, cancel, then resubscribe as the impulse waxes and wanes. Streaming from youtube, even in 4K, has been more consistent, too.

I plan to create a Vudu account this month, rent a 4K title, and watch it on my 4K TV via my wireless network. I hope I am pleased with the results as having a convenient high quality rental option appeals to me.

I agree. Many of the DVD's I've watched are incredibly good all things considered, and in many instances I've been pleasantly surprised. Therefore, I am very happy to keep them......in any case, it would be far too costly to upgrade every DVD title I have, so like yourself, I'll be hanging on to what I've got.

I have replaced every DVD with Blu-ray where possible. Some titles will never get a Blu-ray such as Worzel Gummidge (favourite childhood show) Huck Finn and Friends etc.. I struggle to watch DVD these days but back in the day, they were a big improvement on VHS and I can remember how great the Reds looked. Films like The Patriot really popped on my CRT tv. It was a Philips which was a mighty fine tv and a Sony 735D DVD player. I gave it to my sister back in 2007 and it’s still working now. So that’s about 19 years.

Hopefully this post will remain.

You're right there. Unfortunately even after all these years, some titles still haven't even received a DVD release either (at least here in the UK).....but that's for another thread.

And I my HDMI adapter, but when most places offer DVD’s and your family wants to watch a movie you go with it. Hell, I had a portable BD player for the places that didn’t and the long drive.

It doesn’t help they tend to hide their UHD movies and shows in a poorly laid out menu. Which there’s no excuse for giving they are based out of Seattle.
Up until last year, my Wife's friends would come over for Movie Night and watched DVD's with no problem. Now the Movie Nights are all Streaming HDX from Vudu. As for Amazon Prime, I have been watching the new Jack Ryan Series and it looks great. I see no Degradation with any Movie or Series on Amazon.

I was at two Best Buys today and one Walmart...If it weren't for Marvel super hero movies and some horror movies for Halloween..the movie sections would be really sparse. Walmart had more DVDs than Blus. All 3 stores a disorganized mess.

My Best Buy is an odd case. They have a bunch of the "superhero" movies in Steelbooks, Blu-ray, 4K, DVD. I take a walk through the aisles once in awhile and they have a few of the popular titles and then some that you wouldn't expect to find. For example, I found Clerks Blu-ray there for $10.

Hey, Troll, just because the amazon servers you’re accessing don’t degrade doesn’t mean others don’t have issues with them. It’s a widespread and known problem. No one said on every film and show it happened.

Christ sakes....
