Agreed. I in no way claim to be a technical genius when it comes to film restoration/clean up but this one is almost wax like in appearance at times.

Has anyone seen the new DCP? Makes me wonder if that'll also be a waxfest or if this idiocy was applied by Madman after the fact. Either way, I'm starting to wonder if it's worth petitioning them for a remaster/replacement program (lol fat fuggin chance)

I'd get behind that. Tweet at them or write on their Facebook wall letting them know how much they ****ed up. This kind of ****ery should not be tolerated on this classic Aussie film. They NEED to know so that if they ever get around the making a 4K disc, they'll do it properly.

Oh well, it means they saw it and that’s the point of posting it anyway.

Got this in the mail today from Deep Discount. To me it looks perfectly fine. The prison scenes are very cold and drab. I haven’t seen this since I rented the dvd twenty years ago. When Chopper is released you generous mix of red, orange and blue hues. To me it looks great and showcases Dominik’s talent and vision.
Considering this has been out of print and virtually unavailable, I’m very happy that this incredible film is now in my collection.

Yeah, I agree it looks fine. It's not the point though, a 2021 remaster from 35mm should have plenty of visible grain. They should well and truly know by now to not go overboard with the DNR (or preferably don't even bother using it at all)

I, too, am happy to own this movie...but it doesn't look very good at all. Colors are robust, contrast is pleasing, but the film grain has been obliterated. This doesn't look like film. Damn.

For me, it's nowhere near as bad as some have made it out to be. Yes, someone got a bit overzealous with the DNR, definitely. But it's not Predator-style DNR'd and is most certainly light years ahead of the DVD, at least through my eyes on my system. Glad to have it.

I almost nabbed the iTunes release last week when they added bonus features to it, but it excluded the commentary - an annoyingly common occurance on iTunes Extras releases - so i'll definitely grab the Blu over that.

There was also The Dish I guess. I suppose it depends who was responsible in the first place, if Andrew Dominik did it then he's obviously gone all Peter Jackson and thinks wax is just the bees knees so he'll no doubt refuse to change it.

To be fair, the original release of The Dish was a freaking SD PAL master, what a debacle that was.

I'd also like to hear thoughts on the DCP from those who've gone to see it at the cinema. I have noticed time and time again that Madman's home video department does seem to enjoy a lick of DNR. It frequently looks like additional DNR has been applied to the masters they've been supplied with, even on new releases.

If I’m a betting man, the print that was used was likely a release print or something not far off. Interpositive or OCN scans are an advertising point. So if it’s a third or fourth gen print, it’s gonna look verrrrry grainy. One imagines the grain was a bit too much.

Damn shame.

I wonder if anything better will materialize overseas.

They didn't just scrub the grain off.. what's going on in the part where they play Release the Bats by The Birthday Party in the club? There's trailing, and ghosting, and all kinds of bad shit going on. I saw this in the theaters numerous times, and on DVD 80 times.. they botched this disc. There's no way this was an artistic decision by Dominik. lol I own a thousand Blu-rays, and this has to be the most unwatchable one. My favorite film.

If you make sure your tv is on standard, and you turn your brightness down a little it looks so much better. I can't see that airbrushed looking hallowing? anymore.

Seems like Madman has officially jumped the shark. Botched discs every damn time. I definitely think I'll be importing Pig at this rate. MM will probably crop it and encode it in 1080i.
