Upconvert DVD players - Blu-ray Forum

So, if you have one of these and a 1080p TV, hooked up via HDMI, what resolution exactly is the film being upconverted to? How about a player hooked up via Component Cable, is 480i the best you're gonna get with that? Pardon the ignorance and thanx for any info.

Depends on the scaler and what resolution it can upscale to. Oppo (www.oppodigital.com) have players which upconvert to 720 and 1080p.

Unless your wanting a region free player the ps3 is probably the best upscaler going. If you want region free, get the oppo.

OH come on, the PS3 is one of the worse for upscaling. The samsung BD-p1200 that has the HQV chip is FAR superior at upscaling. Try to find a sub $400 dvd player with a HQV chip?????

Upscaling is so overrated imho... it's amazing.... it's just plastered low rez on a larger cavas ..

Depending on the upscaler, it can make a DVD look much better. I just went through with this experience. I got the Oppo just this week (981). It is excellent and up to par or better than the PS3.

The difference it can make is smoothing and de-interlacing the video at a higher resolution. Obviously, it won't add detail that's not there, it will make it look better though.

I'm gladly enjoying both my PAL and NTSC DVD's on the Oppo. I would have just liked to stick with the PS3 but it cannot be made region free at the moment.
