![]() PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation VR2 Sense controller: the next generation of VR gaming on PS5 Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla and Firesprite revealed for PS VR2 Happy New Year everyone. It is my great pleasure to start off 2022 with news on our next generation virtual reality system for the PS5 console, starting with the official name: PlayStation VR2, and our new VR controller, PlayStation VR2 Sense controller. PlayStation VR2 takes VR gaming to a whole new level, enabling a greater sense of presence and allowing players to escape into game worlds like never before. With the headset on and controllers in hand, players will feel a heightened range of sensations unlike any other – thanks to the creativity of the game worlds being built by our world class developers, and the latest technology incorporated into the hardware. Building upon our innovations from PS5, PlayStation VR2 adds a true next-gen experience with high-fidelity visuals, new sensory features, and enhanced tracking – along with a simplified single-cord setup.
All of these advancements in PlayStation VR2, combined with the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers from the PS VR2 Sense controllers, enable players to feel and interact with games in a much more visceral way. PS VR2 will also have a simple setup process — with a single cable connected directly to PS5, you can immediately jump into the VR experience. Today we are also pleased to reveal that one of the biggest exclusive franchises on PlayStation will be coming to PS VR2 – Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla and Firesprite. This original game is being built specifically for PS VR2 and will open the doors for players to go deeper into the world of Horizon. I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s exciting updates. Just remember, this is only a taste of things to come, and I can’t wait to share more details with you about PS VR2. In the meantime, below is the list of official specifications. ORIGINAL POST Sony Are Officially Working On A Next-Generation VR Headset After much speculation, a job listing has confirmed that Sony is working on a next-generation VR headset. UploadVR found the job application today, with the PSVR 2 headset being developed by a team of around 15 people who will be “in charge of the mechanical design of the lens barrel supporting the optical system, small and lightweight housing, heat radiation design, development of jig for optical system evaluation, etc.” The job application is from the wider Sony corporation and is aimed to have a view five years from now. This could suggest that the headset is aimed to be released five years from now. Here's some of the work they have been doing looking at new controller input methods for 1:1 hand tracking etc. There's a whole white paper on it too. Well, i thought it was more obvious from that prior video of Sony techs messing around with single digit input concepts and whatnot for VR. By the sound of the listing from above, it makes it sound as if they're years away from actual market when they should be ready to rock by 2022 at the latest given how much time from PSVR has passed to allow a better VR headset

I really hope they are targeting something in the neighborhood or HP Reverb G2 (2160p/90Hz) and Valve Index (1440p/120Hz). Even if they don't bump the resolution beyond 1080p, better quality displays would be nice to get rid of that screen door effect.
If I'm completely honest, the only reason I have a PS4 is for PSVR. Obviously there are plenty of great reasons to own a PS4 outside of VR, but I was going to sit this generation out until I tried PSVR. |

Cool. PSVR 2 I predict will be available hopefully by late 2022 at the earliest. Most likely 2023 for PSVR2. Sony I'm sure sold a bunch of PSVR units recently if they went on sale, so they'll allow time to pass before introducing a new PSVR when a new console releases.
PS4 arrived Holiday 2013, and 2016 Holiday is when PSVR 1 arrived. 3 years in. I wouldn't mind improved resolution and better running games and new PSVR 1 releases on PS5 for PSVR regular games until then, as I want to still use the PSVR until the second one is fine tuned. |

I figured this would be ready at launch. If it's years from now I may find buy a new PSVR because I'm really sick of switching the cords.

PSVR2 should really be released in 2021, Sony can't leave it too long and surely they've been working on version 2 since the launch of the first? It will have been developed alongside the PS5.
Fingers crossed anyway. Frankly I'd happily buy a VR2 PS5 bundle on day one |

I much prefer the updated PSVR headset. There is more freedom with the wires as they connect directly to the processor box rather than the two part connection of the older one. |

Yeah, I can imagine PSVR 2 will be wireless, though I hope you can have it corded too when the battery eventually begins to wear out as with the wireless controllers.
Holiday 2022 or 2023 seems reasonable. Too soon would strain the budgets of gamers interested, and reduce the amount of early adopters. I imagine it'll be $399.99 but even that's expensive since it's the cost of a console. That's why it's a tough sell at that price. $499 would be too much I would say. Plus people are still trying to grow their PS5 library with regular games. 199.99 is what I paid while PSVR1 was on sale Holiday 2017. That was a very fair price and it's what got me to finally buy it. Before that, the games weren't enough to convince me, but thankfully Astrobot and Moss helped out later on. |

I wonder if they can shrink it a bit? I’m not saying this is the right design, but maybe something a bit sleeker than the current PSVR.
VR headsets seem to have a lot of wasted space, although I wonder what that expansion port on the front of Valve Index will get us. |

I bet it'll be a few years before we see a PSVR2. Sony won't abandon PSVR 1 owners for awhile I hope until the PSVR 2 arrives. |

1st gen VR has been amazing imo. The resolution hasn’t been a issue for me due to the sheer immersion. It’s a great equaliser.
As the developers have got to grips with the hardware and limitations, things have improved massively. Blood And Truth looked very good, as did Astrobot, Moss, Trover Saves The Universe etc.. I think if you on the fence about PSVR, go for it. It’s good for years yet. |

I really want a flip headset so I can easily move it out of the way so I can see what I'm doing in the real world without having to take it off. On the other hand perhaps they will integrate a means of AR by including a removable back piece, so you can see "through" it

I sit down while I play VR games, so no worry about the real world.
I bet the PSVR2 will be charge-able, cordless, lighter and smaller, higher resolution in games, and offer games that the PSVR can't do yet. Like PS4 quality graphics in an open world VR game. PSVR can't do Fallout 4 VR as we've learned. |
