I second:
Swan Song by Robert McCammon - great end-of-the-world epic with incredibly compelling characters and fabulous adventure and horror... Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov - excellent murder mystery set in a future world where robots are a normal part of society; plenty of suspense and a superb resolution reminiscent of the best Agatha Christie whodunnits...the sequel The Naked Sun is not as good but the 3rd, The Robots of Dawn, while much longer, is a fitting finish to this trilogy...wish Asimov had written more detective fiction featuring Elijah Bailey an R. Daneel... and recommend: The Passage by Justin Cronin - literary, sprawling epic with virus-infected humans possessing vampire-like qualities and the humans who seek a solution... Phantoms by Dean Koontz - incredibly suspenseful horror mystery set in a mountain town where everyone has disappeared...hold on to your seats! Lightning by Dean Koontz - beautifully written time travel thriller that combines sci-fi, action, engaging characters, and a large dollop of humour...one of Koontz's best Joe Last edited by Jock Blu; 01-16-2011 at 12:48 PM. |

I could recommend quite a few, most I posted about in here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/general-ch...u-reading.html
One of my favorite recent books is House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It is one of the most creative and original books i've ever read. I had a hard time putting it down. Here is the wikipedia page for it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Leaves I really enjoyed the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Silmarllion from Tolkien, and the Dark Elf and Demon Wars series from RA Salvatore, but King's Dark Tower series is easily my favorite series. Underhill, Paco. Why we Buy: The Science of Shopping. http://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Buy-Sho.../dp/1416595244
- Interesting read, especially for people in sales/marketing. NON-FICTION Goldsworthy, Adrian. Caesar: Life of a Colossus. http://www.amazon.com/Caesar-Life-Co...5362545&sr=1-2 - Great biography that not only gives insight into Caesar's personal life, but a comprehensive account of all his military conquests. NON-FICTION McCall, Smith. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. http://www.amazon.com/No-Ladies-Dete...5362788&sr=1-3 - Don't let the title (or the premise) turn you away... the original book in the popular series about a lady private detective in Botswana is suspenseful, engaging, and fun. FICTION Blakeslee, Nate. Tulia: Race, Cocaine, and Corruption in a Small Texas Town. http://www.amazon.com/Tulia-Cocaine-...5363133&sr=1-1 - The (true) events that transpired in this small Texas town are quite shocking and may get your blood boiling. NON-FICTION Last edited by BlackMamba; 01-18-2011 at 02:09 PM. |

The Day of The Jackal - Frederick Forsyth
About a plot to assassinate Charles De Gaulle. The book that hooked me into thrillers. The Odessa File - Frederick Forsyth Hunting down Nazis who have blended back into society. A great revenge/spy tale. Without Remorse - Tom Clancy The story of how Mr Clark, who features in many of the Jack Ryan centered Clancy books came to be. Much more edgey and hardened than most Clancy. Glasshouse - Charles Stross About a social experiment in the far future. Really good sci fi. Dune - Frank Herbert It's Dune, most on this board have probably read it, but if you haven't, go read it! |

![]() As for Dean Koontz, my favorite book by him is still Phantoms! Awesomely creepy! Instead of recommending individual titles, I'll recommend current authors that I like reading depending on what mood I'm in. James Patterson - I know many people dislike/hate him because of the amount of books he puts out, but I still read "his" books when I'm in the mood for something light and quick. The books always grab me and are entertaining. I'm usually done in a day or so. Daniel Silva - The Gabriel Allon series is excellent! One of my favorite authors! Eoin Colfer - Brilliant Irish author, whose work is, of course, geared towards young adults. Artemis Fowl, Airman, The Supernaturalist - great books. Anthony Horowitz - Another one of my favorite authors, also geared towards young adults. Love the Alex Rider series (Action) and The Gatekeeper series (Horror). The Diamond Brothers books are hilarious. Kenneth Oppel - Not a well known author, but I LOVE his Airborn series. It's also aimed towards young adults, but I absolutely love his imagination. Stephen King - Obvious go to guy for scary and well-written stories. Joe Hill - Mr. King's son has talent! I would definitely look into his work. If you like graphic novels, definitely check out the Locke & Key series. Michael Connelly - I haven't read all the Harry Bosch books, but he's a great crime writer IMO. Christopher Buckley - If you like laughing, pick up one of his books! ![]() Also, thank you Mods/Admin for creating a book section ![]() |

![]() What kinda stuff you into? Most of my favs are pretty dark, so i'll just recommend a couple. Child of God by Cormac Mccarthy -- about as disturbing as it gets True Grit by Charles Portis -- not very dark. pretty funny really Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner -- what a weirdo Anything by Daniel Woodrell ("winters bone" and "give us a kiss: a country noir" being my two favs thus far), Flannery O'Conner (you won't find a better female writer), and Raymond Chandler. |

I really enjoy Sci-fi and Fantasy so one of my favorite publishers since getting into e-books is Baen. They like to give away books by there authors to get you hooked on them. You can also buy a monthly collection of 4-8 books for $15.
http://www.webscription.net// http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/ The first link you can buy books from them, the second is downloadable "CD"s of Baen's e-book collections which have been previously released. One series I enjoyed: Empire of Man series by John Ringo - March Upcountry March to the Sea March to the Stars We Few [Show spoiler] You can find all 4 of the books in the series on the "At All Costs" CD from the BaenCD site. For a good book that doesn't take itself very seriously try: Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia and it's sequel Monster Hunter Vendetta Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a fourteenth story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer. [Show spoiler]
