''True Grit'' by Charles Portis. Even if you're not a fiction fan. It's insanely well written and very entertaining.

I am a big fan of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. I think it's suspenseful and funny.

Any books that you would recommend that are either funny or suspenseful, preferably having both qualities? =)

I really liked Dan Brown's new book. Intellectual, fast paced, thrilling. Plus I'm a huge fan of Dante, so that was cool.

If you're a fan of sci-fi, I recommend "Timeline" and "Sphere" by Micheal Crichton. All his books are amazing, but those two are a couple of my favorites.

If you're a fan of horror read "Night Shift" by Stephen King.

If you're a fan of comedy read "Practical Demonkeeping" and "The Stupidest Angel" by Christopher Moore. Both novels have a slight horror sub-genre to them. They are comedy horrors, but 95% comedy. Hilarious style of writing.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

One of the most fun books I've read in the past few years. It is full of references to video-games, books, movies and music from the 80's.

Quote:
In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.

But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

Mystery/ thriller is really vague, can you narrow it down some? Do you like espionage thrillers?

Are you looking for murder mysteries?

It can go on and on........ Help us help you

Can anyone recommend some hard sci-fi books or series? I am looking for books that have less of the military aspect (as most sci-fi books published in the last few years seem to have) and more science and exploration. Thank you.

Usually can't go wrong with Arthur C. Clarke or Isaac Asimov. Out of theirs I found Childhood's End and the I, Robot stories fascinating.

I have read some of PKD's books, but I find his work pretty weird sometimes. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Ubik, A Scanner Darkly, and The World Jones Made are decent.

When I was younger, I read a couple of books by Stephen Baxter. Anti-Ice was pretty interesting. The Time Ships (sequel to HG Wells' Time Machine) blew me away.

I love Michael Crichton's books - Jurassic Park, Timeline, Congo, and Sphere are all really fun and very well-researched. Haven't read The Andromeda Strain yet, but that's a story that's probably the most scientific.

Read The Neuromancer for a class. I found the style rather incomprehensible, but it is essential cyberpunk.

If you're willing to go way back, the books of Jules Verne are pretty fast and easy reads.

That's all I can think of for now. Not sure if any of it is really hard enough sci-fi for you, but I found them all worthwhile.

A bit obvious, but Lolita and The Age of Innocence. Pure genius on both accounts.

I'm looking for a mystery/thriller type book. murder mysteries are my favorites.

I really love books with crazy plot twists, I loved Gone Girl, so if anybody knows a book like that I'd love to hear your suggestion.

I've already read Dark Places, Sharp Objects, Girl On The Train, Defending Jacob

Have you read The Truth and Other Lies by Sascha Arango? It is sort of in the Gone Girl ballpark (though not quite as good).

Try Miss Smilla's Feeling For Snow by Peter Hoeg, it's the book that started the Scandi crime craze.

Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. It's more than 150-year old novel but a good food for thought.
