I have thought about that, I look at my last bill and my wife and I used about 4.5 gigs in data usage and neither one of us tether. Thats scary.

I am on wifi when I am at home, but when I am at home, I am on my ipad or laptop so the phone does not get used. I need to check and see if my wife has her wifi enabled. I do have my work email, personal email, and personal business emails coming to my phone. My outlook syncs with my calendar and is a must have. They are set to push. I think thats were alot of my data comes from because my phone is like my life at work. It keeps me organized and aware of what I have to do that day. My morning ritual is waking up and seeing what is on my calendar for work that day. I am always in meetings so I send alot of emails from my phone through out the day.

if you mean software update like 4.1 to 4.1.2 then no you cant not untill the dev team says so, but you can update all your apps etc, I've been on 4.1 since it's release nothing on 4.3 doesn't intrest me so I don't update

I do iPhone repairs and service for a living. All iPhone 4's up to 4.2.1 are currently jailbreakable. 4.3 and 4.3.1 are as well but it is a tethered jailbreak. Not the most ideal but it works.

Also, for the person who asked about tethering on the 3Gs...MyWi is your best bet. It works great and it's only $20 one time, not an extra $20 per month. The people who've came out and said they got data warnings from AT&T are most likely using ridiculous amounts of data. One person on a tech site said they got the warning after using 10gbs of data. I doubt many will even come close to that.

Battery life for iPhone tethered is said to be excellent. Your concerns are unfounded, other phones mileage will vary though.
This. Like I said above, I use the Bluetooth tethering which seems to be better on battery life than Wifi, but even with the Wifi tethering I wasn't finding my battery draining very quickly. One of the things I'm really appreciating since returning to the iPhone is that I can use it as much as I want without worrying about the battery draining and having to be somewhere where I can charge it. Plus, my extra cost with tethering is a whopping $1 to get the same benefit as spending an extra $130 on the iPad itself plus the additional monthly fee. I believe there are free options for enabling tethering too, but I like just using the stock personal hotspot setup.

Fwiw, I used TetherMe instead of MyWi. It was cheaper (isn't MyWi like 20 bucks?) and does the same thing.

Is anyone able to tell me wich apps are a must have on the iPad 2? I found some lists on the internet but those don't really look interesting.

For those doing jailbreak tethering, I thought AT&T was cracking down and forcing a tether data plan??? Weren't they sending text messages out to users?

They are, but the consensus so far seems to be that they're just looking for people using a lot of data or looking for spikes in data usage, but that they don't actually know that you're tethering. I've seen posts from a lot of people saying they've used the Pandora defense and they've let it go. Data is data. It's an unlimited plan. Seems simple to me lack of foresight into how I can use that unlimited data is not my problem.

Not sure if this helps, but these are the common ones I use. there are a ton of other apps which are more specific to my needs, but are probably not relevant to you and your needs.

I had no idea Bookshelf had an app! That should make college even easier.

Default connect iPad to wired LAN

I'll be spending a few days at a hotel. The good news is, they have LAN internet connection. The bad news is, it's wired and not wireless.

I'm trying to travel light so I tought of only taking my iPad with me. Is there any way I can connect to their wired LAN? With a notebook, it would be a simple matter of plugging in the cable. With the iPad, unfortunately not

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Just bring the laptop. You never know.

So you're saying the iPad can only connect to wi-fi wireless only? If so, I didn't know that.

I think Radio Shack or Monoprice has a small pocket sized device to enable a wired connection to wireless. it was meant for hotels, so look around. they do make them.
