Agreed. What's especially funny is when Ratso first strikes up a conversation with Joe, he's so glad that someone is actually talking to him that he doesn't realize (at first) that Ratso is just trying to scam & rip him off. Obviously, Joe's small-town naivete is showing through here.

What's also fascinating about the film is that it's so distinctly American, and yet it was directed by someone from the UK (John Schlesinger).

39 years ago, I bought my first VCR. I've resisted ever buying this, knowing Criterion would eventually release this.

My patience has been rewarded.

Criterion already released this in January 1992.

One of my favorite bits is when they're discussing reincarnation and Ratso says, "Some people believe you can come back in another body." And Joe says, "Well, I hope I don't come back in your body!"

Hoffmann and Voigt have great comic timing and chemistry. One of the best and most haunting buddy movies of all time.

Why they didn't simply reuse that same breathtaking cover art, I'll never know.

I think that sums up my opinion of the cover. It just feels very 1960'/70's. I think it would look very nice as a Digipak too.

The laserdisc cover is crap. So glad they didn’t go with that this time around. The “psychedelic” cover of the blu captures the vibe of this movie perfectly.

Agree that the laserdisc cover is s%$.

The new Blu Criterion cover is not only an obvious improvement - but the best Blu cover I've seen for not only this film, but any 1960's movie.

I don't know about capturing the vibe of the movie but it absolutely captures the vibe of the era.

Very nice job.

Anime Laserdisc covers have some amazing artwork. If I had infinite money in this day and age, I would begin amassing a collection of these. Great link! Thanks!

How funny, I was thinking exactly the opposite! To each his own.

I think it captures the mood of the film and era exactly right.

I don't care much about anime especially since I never post in that sub-forum.

Going to wait until I see this for $18 or less.

It's taken seven years to finally have a legitimate reason for replacing the Canadian edition of the 2011 MGM release that had 'Macadam Cowboy' prominantly displayed across the cover and down the spine. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the folks at Criterion!

Saw the movie not long after it was released and can honestly say that it was one of the most impactful film experiences I've ever had. It absolutely captured the spirit and ethos of the period as well as the timeless drama and pathos of people who struggle on the fringes in a world that passes them by and often just doesn't give a damn.

And I love the cover!

For those of you wondering why it took so long to be released again, consider this for a moment: how many best of lists does it make nowadays? You'll find your answer there.

In short, Midnight Cowboys' status has declined whereas other Criterion titles released in May have increased. e.g Au Hasard Balthazar and Mishima.

It is suffering the same fate as Easy Rider. Known more for its historical importance.
