If it's true we may finally get rid of that terrible low-pass filtering.

Holy crap! Well, it makes sense, since this year marks the 50th anniversary. I half expected it for that reason, but it's still a pleasant surprise to see it come so early.

Please don't mess this one up in any way, Warners.

Literally, I was just watching Simpons, season 5 where Homer flies into space and they have this reference to Space Odyssey at the very end.
At that moment I was thinking to myself - with that symphony running in my mind - how great would it be for 2001 to finally get 4K treatment. And the next thing... I open blu-ray.com forum and read this Great news!

Who can forget?

I have seen it theatrically twice, both on 35mm and 70mm. Both prints were from the same restoration and while I'd say neither looked that good by today's standard, it was really cool to see it on 70mm, especially when sitting on the first row. Still I have high hopes for this new release. I'd easily pick this over any modern blockbuster on UHD-BD.

Forget discs, I want a nationwide theatrical re-release. This is one of the few classics I've never gotten to see on the big screen, and probably the one that would benefit from it the most.

Only a BD66 for a 149min film. I'm a bit surprised, hopefully that's not correct info.

I'm definitely in for this. Great movie!

The news of a 4K release has made my day but i so agree a re-release in cinemas would be so good, havent seen it in the flics for decades.

Kubrick signed off on new 70mm prints just before his death in preparation for the limited reissue in 2001. He mainly readjusted the soundtrack to new industry standards. I saw it in November 2001 at the Uptown Theater in DC (where the film premiered). It looked great - just as good or better than I remembered seeing the film many times in that theater during the original release in 1968-69.
