Default Do You Miss 24 Hour Stores?

Ever since the COVID outbreak one year ago, it seems like 24 hour stores are a thing of the past. Most Walmart Supercenters are open 7:00 am to 11:00 pm and there seems to be no intention to go back to 24 hours at any point. Super Kmart Centers died out two years before COVID, but most of them were 24 hours in the early years. I miss going to Walmart Supercenter (and Super Kmart Center) at 3:00 am to purchase whatever food I'm craving (or to pick up a new release Blu-ray or video game at 12:00 am) on my nights off. It was nice to have the option.

These stores discovered that the overnight sales numbers didnít justify the cost of staffing the necessary employees, money lost due to theft, etc.

Unless you work night shifts, I can't imagine needing something that badly at 3:00 AM.

Even before the pandemic the grocery stores in my area stopped being open 24hrs. Which made Walmart the only 24 hr grocery store here.

We still have 24hr Walgreens and CVS drug stores. So if you needed something that badly like some type of household item, batteries, milk, medicine, non perishable food, etc., you can still easily get it.

You can even have it delivered at all hours of the night with Door Dash or any other delivery app.

We have four Walgreens here, two of which used to be 24 hours, but they started closing at night a few years ago. A CVS opened here a few years ago, but it was never 24 hours.

I guess most people don't care, but when you work nights (as I have since 2006) you tend to be up on your nights off as you usually sleep during the day. It kind of sucks that almost everything is shut down between the hours of 10:00 pm to 7:00 am. Granted, it's not too big of a deal because I usually plan ahead and have things to eat here at the house, but there is always that spur of the moment want. ("Ice cream sounds really good right now. Damn, I don't have any and everything's closed.")

Shopping during the overnight hours is always so much more pleasant than shopping during the day. You can actually move around freely without having people trying to run you over with their cart, blocking aisles, etc. Have you ever been to a Walmart Supercenter during the middle of the day, especially on a Saturday? It's like being swarmed by hordes of cattle.

When the first Walmart Supercenter opened in 1988 in Washington, Missouri, the 24 hour Supercenter format was fairly new to most of the United States. Only Meijer and Walmart's Hypermart USA (the first opened in December 1987) did it earlier in the US, although 24 hour hypermarkets were typical much earlier in other countries such as France. There were two big draws to these massive stores. Combining a full service grocery store with a department store under one roof and being open 24 hours. Now, with everything closed at night, it seems like we're moving backwards.

It's not like I can't live without 24 hour stores. Just a general disappointment.

That may be true in a lot of cases, but most Walmart stores have an overnight crew/shift (stockers and maintenance) from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am regardless if the store is open 24 hours or not. The only extra employees needed for the store to be open 24 hours would be a few extra cashiers. The theft might be what drives it, especially in the bigger markets where crime is more prevalent.

With automated checkout lines becoming more common, I have a feeling we'll see the return of the 24 hour stores somewhere down the line. God knows I miss our neighborhood Wal-Mart. I hate the crowds in the daytime, shopping after midnight was perfect. Late nighters and recluses alike love the 24/7 shopping experience.

The only 24 hour store in my area is a single CVS store. I never shop there and only visit that store to use the Redbox kiosk.

I don’t miss these types of stores because I don’t shop late at night, unless it is Black Friday.

I missed the 24 hour stores mostly because during covid my family at one point wanted to lower our risk while shopping by going during less crowded hours so all the stores naturally condensed their hours to pack pack people closer...

I donít have to have something at midnight generally but having zero traffic and zero lines does save a considerable amount of time.

The only 24 hour store I can think of is Walmart, and I HATE going to Walmart. Just the worst kinds of people shopping there and half of them aren't even wearing masks. I'd rather go to Target.

Yes. Sometimes you'll badly need something when you least expect. For example, one night I cut my hand around midnight and had to buy antibiotic ointment for like ten bucks at a gas station because it was the only option. At the very least, it would be nice to have available 24 hour pharmacy access.

Theft is more of an issue during overnight hours and places like Walmart, with their wide open doorways that aren't always manned, are like an invitation to steal. These places lose billions of dollars a year to thieves so unless they come up with better security methods, more and more stores will cut back overnight operations.

I've never felt the urge to go out in the middle of the night for a snack and anything else I need I can buy during normal hours.

Yeah, a few Walmarts around here stopped the 24hour thing a year of more before Covid ever happened. The reason was because of theft.

Pretty much convenience stores are the only things open 24hrs.

And another thing... Some fast food place, which shall remain nameless, said they were open 24 hours. However, they had (when they were open) a time period where they could not take orders for an hour because they were running their end of day reports. So, they said open 24 hours, but were really only open for business 23. I went a couple times and I happened to be there when they were doing their reports.

Considering I like sleep, I rarely ever needed the 24 hour stores, I did love BF shopping all night back in the day
