Connecting new player to older TV

I received this player: http://www.samsung.com/us/video/blu-ray-dvd/BD-H5900/ZA & was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to connect it to my TV which has Composite & Component inputs only. What set of cable should I be looking for?

You'd have to use some kind of convertor or HDMI to component leads to get the player to work, either:



I don't have any experience with the devices, so you're best looking at reviews on your Amazon, to find one that suits you, the component to HDMI leads all seem to have poor reviews, so whether a box is a better solution I'm not sure.

You need a converter box (HDMI -> Component) like this one.

Keep in mind that these converter boxes are not typically bi-directional. They typically only convert one way like "HDMI->Component" or "Component->HDMI" but not both.

Also you'll need a set of cables if you don't already have them:
- 1 x HDMI
- 1 x Component Video (RGB)
- 1 x Stereo Audio (Red & White)


There are also these single-cable solutions like this one, but the reviews seem to indicate that your source device must be able to output analog over the HDMI port (very rare?).

Does your TV not have DVI?

Just checked, no DVI.
The TV is quite old, but still works great (even after dropping it face-1st a few years ago).
I don't think either input & output devices support the signal conversion function (not in the manuals & can't find info online ).
I'm going to lean towards a converter box, now to find a good reliable one.

There is no point, none, at all...connecting a BD player to that TV.

Agreed.
It's only capable of 4:3 viewing at 480i max resolution.
Time to bite the bullet and upgrade.

I already know I won't see the "supposedly" greater picture by using my older TV, but it's what I have at the moment, it still works just fine & don't have the money to go out & get a mid-high end HDTV right know (perhaps when I finally get a job).

FWIW, I've purchased HDMI switchers made by Portta and they worked great with several HDMI devices including a Comcast DVR and a Sony 3D Blu-ray player.
