Ryu Hayabusa + Ayane + Wii U = Ninja Awesomeness
The solitary ninja, Ryu Hayabusa, must find a way to lift the deadly curse on his right arm before it destroys him. NINJA GAIDEN 3: Razors Edge has been reworked to bring to Wii U the truly intense, high-speed challenge and action NINJA GAIDEN fans demand. And this time, the female ninja, Ayane, will join the battle as a new playable character in her own exclusive chapters within story mode. With more weapons and Ninpo types, a new character progression system, a redesigned battle system, a new character, two-player online co-op game play using Ryu and Ayane, and the return of dismemberment, NINJA GAIDEN 3: Razors Edge improves upon the original NINJA GAIDEN 3 in every way and offers Wii U exclusive features and functionalities.

I (unfortunately) played this trainwreck since my friend bought it for the 360. It's one of the worst games in years and barely resembles the prior two (very good) Ninja Gaiden games. Hopefully the Wii U version is of far superior quality, but it's doubtful.

the Steel on Bone mechanic feels fantastic in Razor’s Edge with the inclusion of dismemberment. Countering an obnoxious enemy grab with an SoB attack and literally cleaving the enemy in two feels utterly thrilling and rewarding…

*No doubt due to Ninja Gaiden 3‘s bad reception, many attendees passed the game up, not realizing the massive changes that were made in Razor’s Edge. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge feels surprisingly good: it’s fast, challenging, and engaging. Razor’s Edge feels like a true sequel to Ninja Gaiden 2.

TGS: Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge Repairs Past Mistakes
Violet violence.
by Mitch Dyer
September 19, 2012

Studio head Yosuke Hayashi knows Team Ninja made mistakes with Ninja Gaiden 3, and with the Wii U redux Razors Edge, he says, were ready to start again. Rather than reinforcing the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions goal of appealing to a new Ninja Gaiden audience, the development team is reeling it in to focus on their longtime fans. Razors Edge aims to achieve this in multiple ways and it already succeeds in some.

The quickest and easiest way into a Ninja Gaiden nerds heart is obscene violence, which, compared to past entries, Ninja Gaiden 3 toned down considerably. With Razors Edge, Team Ninja cranks the gore factor as high as the series has seen. Arms fly off in a flurry of blood and blade, heads roll past piled-up corpses, and torsos separate from appendages in a comically explosive manner. Its a cosmetic difference on Wii U, but in tandem with the refined lethality of your characters attacks, combat feels fantastic rather than tedious.

I spent my 10 minute Ninja Gaiden 3 demo playing as Ayane, the violet-haired Dead or Alive vet turned Ninja Gaiden starlet. Shes exclusive to Razors Edge, and shes a damn fine addition. Her double short-swords are quick and vicious, and shes just as capable as Ryu Hayabusa when it comes to slaughtering terrorists. Her explosive throwing-knives let her fire and forget about entire groups while cherry-picking (and decapitating) individuals from the herd. Shes functionally similar to Hayabusa in terms of combos and skills, complete with a screen-clearing special move, so it will be interesting to see how she differs in her side of the story long term.

Ayane helps bring the variety Ninja Gaiden 3 needed in the first place, though. Alongside Ryus expanded armory (the scythe is on the disc rather than paid add-on content) a new progression system (finally, unlockable abilities and upgradable ninpo magic/weapons), and unspecified free downloadable content (series fans are going to love it, Hayashi promised), Razors Edge looks to more than make up for past shortcomings.

Arguably the most important aspect of all is that I died multiple times in Razors Edge because I wasnt playing as smart as I should have been. Ninja Gaiden 3 would exhaust your health points with protracted battles against wave after wave of too-tough enemies; Razors Edge already appears to be a more pure test of your dexterity, cognition, and caution in combat. The jurys still out if the A.I. is as improved as Team Ninja boasts. Thats going to take more time than a 10-minute demo allows.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razors Edge makes massive strides toward becoming the game Team Ninja clearly wishes it was on 360 and PS3 earlier this year. Hayashi and his team clearly took the negative criticism and hardcore fan backlash to heart and they deserve a second chance when Razors Edge hits North America on November 18.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge will have free downloadable content after the game launches. Hayashi didn’t reveal the content, but gave hints saying there was "quite a bit" and "series fans are going to love it."

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razors Edge for Wii U just keeps getting better
http://www.2d-x.com/ninja-gaiden-3-r...etting-better/
  • Perhaps the most significant change of all is the fact that Ryu is actually responsive in Razors Edge. Ryus recovery has been shortened greatly, so players can easily cancel into a dodge or block as the situation demands.
  • Enemies have been improved. They are more aggressive, and some have access to new moves. The basic terrorist grunts and alchemists are the most obvious examples.
  • Combat has been redesigned to have a more technical feel. Enemies have more stagger animations (including wall damage/stuns). Both playable characters now have a universal grab (the Guillotine throw).
  • Charge attacks are extremely fast. Ninja Gaiden 3 introduced a charge mechanic, whereby holding down the heavy attack resulted in a powerful combo extension. The length of time needed to charge this attack has been reduced dramatically.
  • There are six weapons available to Ryu in Razors Edge right from the get-go. Ryu now has access to the claws, scythe, dual katanas, staff, and an as-of-yet unrevealed weapon, on top of the standard katana.
  • Karma has been redesigned to function as both the point/ranking system, as well as currency.
  • Collectible items have been reintroduced. The Golden Scarabs from the original Ninja Gaiden, and Crystal Skulls from Ninja Gaiden 2 are strewn about each stage, and can be collected for an instant Karma bonus.
  • Players can use this Karma currency to purchase upgrades for weapons and magic (Ninpo) as well as unique combat abilities and even in-game costumes.
  • The new Cicada Surge teleportation ability has been polished greatly since its reveal back during E3. It is an incredibly handy way to get out of overwhelming situations.
  • A new ability, called Four Rings has been introduced. It is a 360 shuriken attack that stuns enemies surrounding Ryu, and can be tacked on to combos on-the-fly, much like ordinary shuriken attacks.
  • Ultimate Techniques can be used even when Ryu/Ayanes weapons arent glowing red, simply by holding down and charging a heavy attack (much like in Ninja Gaiden 2). Ultimate Techniques have two charge levels once again.
  • Ninpo is still earned through combat. However, you can keep your Ninpo charge between encounters now, allowing you to cast magic or save it as you see fit.
  • Bosses have life gauges now. You can see their health on the bottom of the screen.

New Trailer

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge Free DLC Will Add More Playable Characters
http://www.siliconera.com/2012/10/25...le-characters/
  • Razor’s Edge will launch with new weapons and characters, a redesigned battle system and online multiplayer modes along with extra features and enhancements exclusive to Wii U.
  • Ayane as a playable character: In previous versions of the game, Ayane appeared only briefly in one cut scene. Now players can help her progress through her own exclusive chapters using a special set of weapons and Ninpo attacks.
  • Character-progression system: Using Karma points earned during game play, players can upgrade weapons and Ninpo, learn new moves, increase their HP level and unlock new character costumes.
  • Ryu and Ayane playable in co-op mode: For the first time, players can use Ryu or Ayane to represent themselves in the game’s online co-op mode.
  • Test of Valor battle areas: Each chapter includes a hidden battle area called Test of Valor. Upon finding hidden Crystal Skulls, players will be transported to these areas to face down waves of enemies and classic NINJA GAIDEN boss characters with new moves.
  • Wii U GamePad Functionality: Using the Wii U GamePad, players can easily change weapons or Ninpo attacks, and also quickly reference the button inputs required for various combo attacks without ever stopping the action.
  • Additional Playable Characters: After the launch of the game, additional playable characters will become available as free downloadable content. More information about these characters will be revealed at a later time.
  • More Tenacious Enemies: The Wii U version of the game restores enemies’ ability to fight when severely wounded, requiring players to stay nimble with their battle strategies.
