Default Wii U

Just announced at E3...is the Wii U - called the swiss army knives of video game controllers.

Discuss your opinions on this new product. It appears you can use this with the console and switch between this screen and the TV.

It's as if they think Apple is the future of gaming so they copied them. All I can say is why? How can they be so stupid as to think Apple is a main competitor?

They delivered a U alright, the effin kind.

I like the design of the system and controller and will definitely be getting one in the future. Here is what the console looks like. Didn't see much of the conference but weird they only showed the controller and not the actual console.

Argh, typical Nintendo with their press conferences. All show and no specs (except for the controller). They seemed to focus on the controller more than anything, which may mean that the power behind the Wii U may underwhelm compared to what had been rumored. Hopefully some more specs will come out in the next couple of days. Of course they may reveal more at TGS...

What a confusing E3 for Nintendo. The hosts of G4 can't help but laugh after the Nintendo conference. And look just as confused as most people watching it, including myself.
The console will do 1080p confirmed by Nintendo's North America President.

I think TGS is when we'll get some REAL info on this. This was just a misguided preview saying "We really hope it does this". Nothing concrete what-so-ever.

I think Wii U is an awful name, but I'm sure Nintendo's marketing gurus wanted them to maintain the name Wii in there somewhere given the worldwide sales success of that console.

I'm interested to find out how comfortable that controller will be for a long gaming session. As some people have mentioned, it kinda seems like they want to have the controller basically be the bottom touch screen on a DS, with the HUD and what not while the action occurs on the tv.

Also, it's hard for me to get real excited about the announcement of Arkham City, Mass Effect, etc. While it's nice that Nintendo is trying to beef up 3rd party support, that just pulls them even with what's coming to PS3/360, not leaping beyond.

But, anything Nintendo for me is pretty much day 1 given their first-party titles.

Certainly Nintendo could also be in trouble if the Wii U isn't as successful as the Wii was, since you've got to think Microsoft or Sony will start talking more specifically about their next generation consoles maybe sometime next year, which would once aging put Nintendo behind the curve in terms of graphical prowess, etc.

No Blu-ray support, disappointing. They really missed that boat.

At least they got true surround sound finally!

Some specs from the press release:

There was literally nothing shown that makes me want to forgo using a 360/PS3 for doing my regular cutting-edge gaming. I don't need a 6 inch touchscreen to play the new COD or Battlefield.

Engadget has a post up that IBM states the same processor tech that was in "Watson" is used to power the Wii U.

No problem. Here's a pic of this thing being used so you can get a sense of scale. It's the XBox Duke Reborn!

Interesting on the audio side. PCM for the output, so no additional codecs supported. If it is uncompressed PCM then that will require additional space opposed to DD and the like. One other thing absent is the media format capacities.

All receivers don't have the ability to decode PCM right? So only outputting PCM will limit a lot of the mainstream consumers...
