SDBD is pretty much only Discotek's thing as well as RightStuf, but RightStuf releases very few titles per year.

Pretty much that with Funimation. Be nice if they would do it but I guess that is a no go.

Don't get get Sentai they have done a few SDBD's. But as you said they pretty much stopped and it is RS and Discotek's realm now.

It appears that way. Japan recently released an SDBD of Speed Grapher, to which Funimation could of used but obviously decided not to since it's now OOP. The license could have very well expired before the SDBD came out anyway.

And yes, there is a DVD-only Essentials title (FUNimation, just release it on Blu-ray already, it's had one in Japan since 2011...).

Nice! I like frakensteining anime box sets! Anyway, unfortunately the seller of that JP xxxHolic auction sent me an email overnight telling me the box sets were already sold locally in their store, so I wasn't able to get them. I really hate when Japanese sellers do that and don't bother to remove the online listing, that has happened to me before, pisses me off.

But, they did post me a link to another of their auctions for a complete US box set of xxxHolic, with the 6 discs all still sealed in shrinkwrap with security stickers, so I bought that one instead, although for twice the price of the first auction. Hopefully they don't pull the same stunt they did with the JP sets and tell me it's not available again already. Sigh, I actually liked the appearance of the two JP box sets much more.






EDIT: I received this reply from the seller, so I was successful at getting the US box set, ironically from Japan...

xxxHolic and pretty much most of the shows licensed during the time period Navarre owned Funimation did not seem to sell to well. Heck most NA Anime companies around that time were having a bad time with sales. Maybe part of it was stuff was still mostly being released as single 3 to 4 episode volumes. Funimation at least did seem to have a turn around when they started releasing those complete sets.

It is sad to me a bad sales time pretty much doomed so many shows to not getting a possible better release.

I to wish more companies would take up the SDBD. Though I think most that are not Discotek would pull a Sentai and not spend the time to really understand how to do them properly. Sentai did have 1 or 2 that the issues were not as bad. Sadly though most as we know turned out unwatchable.

It went OOP sometime around July 2021. I always thought we’d see it get reissued, but it looks like that’s not going to happen anytime soon, now that Netflix have their grimey mitts on it.

Part of that is the titles they got at the time. After ADV's deal with Sojitz imploded, they got nearly all the titles from it, then months later entered a distribution deal with Geneon, then not long after they rescued many ADV and Geneon titles. FUNimation's turn around was when other companies were in great decline or in Geneon's case had gone under when the bubble had popped and they were able to get many of those titles for cheap.

The anime DVD bubble was full of bad decisions, everyone was overpaying for licenses (many shows sold well, but didn't turn a profit because the licensing costs were too high), there were ridiculous expectations, print runs that were way too big caused in part by the bloated licensing costs, dubbing everyting under the sun, and so much more.

Turns out Netflix stream does not include any English dub, so if you are interested in that or on having it on disc, you should probably grab the show soon. As mentioned above and as of this writing Right Stuf still has the full-series BD sets in stock.

Edit: Netflix version also has new subs! huh.
