They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) 1/2
Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Gig Young

Hang in there. At the hour mark I was not impressed at all by this “must-see” film. Then….Wow! Picks up a lot of steam right till the end. Like many movies of this time, late 60’s and early 70’s, the endings are not just endings; they leave you with a few unanswered questions. Best blind buy in a long time.

History of the Occult | dir. Christian Ponce | 2020 |

It's a brilliant concept to mix political intrigue with horror, the occult, and...eldritch things. Unfortunately, the execution is lacking and in this case, the fault lays with the writing. The look and mood of the film are fantastic, and the acting was solid enough, but the writing is muddled. It keeps interrupting itself in an attempt to build suspense and intrigue, but in the end it just feels more convoluted and confounding than intricate and elaborate. The number of times key events are mentioned and then left unanswered, often with characters literally saying some form of "I can't tell you that yet" or "let's talk about that later" with zero reason given is almost funny.

The villains are definitely better than the heroes in this one.

Not bad for a first effort but it runs a bit long. The fact that he went from this to Memories of Murder as his second movie is insane.

Galaxy Quest (1999)

I had picked the Hunt for Red October for my ensemble movie. Then I went back and re-read comedy ensemble. I was able to slot it in another category.

I thought Galaxy Quest was brilliant. Thought it was silly at first until I realised it was a great Parody of scifi conventions, Science Fiction with Star Trek in particular and especially Kirk and crew. Just a delightful movie.

I don't hate this as much as everyone else does. I like the designs on all the various Green Lanterns and the Parallax villain. I'm glad they gave some of the secondary DC super hero characters a chance at their own films.

I enjoyed the re-make slightly better but glad to finally watch this one. Still a few Hitchcock movies, I haven't seen.

Default A Science Fiction film set in the 1950's

Invasion of the Body Snatchers | dir. Don Siegel | 1956 | ½

Whoops! Kind of read it wrong and just watched a Sci-Fi film from the 50s instead of just one set there, but it still works. I think I prefer the '78 version overall, but I'm sure that's partly because I saw it first. Still, the Siegel version gave me a chance to play my favorite movie-watching game, "Twilight Zone Spotting", and there's at least two here. The lead actor was instantly recognizable as the titular character from the episode "Long Live Walter Jameson" about an )almost) immortal man, and the woman who's worried about her uncle being not her uncle in Body Snatchers is the wife in "Escape Clause", in which her husband makes a deal with the devil to become immortal. Pretty sure the bald doctor at the beginning was on Dick Van Dyke too.

Also the original movie to a remake (or like three).
