Default PS3 Blu-ray compatibility question

This might be a dumb question but I am a real novice with technology. I want to know if you can still watch copy-protected blu-ray dvds even if you don't have an HDMI connection with your PS3? I am only using the component cable with blue, green, and orange connectors.

Also will it be in 1080i or 1080p?

I want to be sure before I buy Planet Earth $60 and all. Any help is welcome.

Thanks

Planet Earth will play just fine on either cable. As I understand it, newer movies that utilize BD+, no discs have it yet, would need HDMI to decode properly.

They should play just fine even with BD+, you just won't have the features. That doesn't bother me a bit.

The output would be 1080i (I believe) and not p......but I could be wrong....my set is only capable of 1080i and it's gorgeous.

the display will be at 1080i. it won't be until some studio implements their ICT flags before movies will be downrezzed over component and you will have to use hdmi
