I think they could hold out for years. It really depends a lot on how Sony do with the PS3 roll out and how BD players sell in general once there is a good selection of them.

We cant say Universal will never make BDs. If BD is successful then they'll start supporting it.

The revenue will be more tempting than loyalty to HD DVD

It seems that Universal will be only too glad to share in BDs success, but not to be any part in creating that success I bet.

Well, considering the piss-poor job other stiduos did with existing BDs, I'd rather not have that kind of "part" at all. At this moment those BDs look like saboteur jobs to support HD DVD.

Amazon has allready listed the LOTR Trilogy for HD-DVD, not BD though. Does this mean New Line has made a decision (in favour of HD-DVD) ? I sure don't hope so, because I really want these in Hi-Def!

Exactly. If anyone is trying to pass off a LOTR HD DVD right now it's fake.

Ah not so fast there Brian. Sony released the Jurassic Park movies as Superbit DVDs in Japan so there's certainly reason to believe they can released them again as BDs there. I'm sure a workaround for region coding will be forthcoming and bingo, BD fans are set.

I agree that the sales of BD players, discs, and the PS3 will be a factor but IMO Universal will be supporting BD by the end of next year.

It took several years for big time A titles to make it on a stablized DVD format.

I think it'll take at least that long for big time A titles to make it out on either HD format.

A format war environment guarantees that much more of a delay.

As much as I'd love to see it, I know I won't be seeing LOTR on a high def disc for quite some time.

I don't know what the status of the rights issues are with that title, but the U.S. & Japan are the same region with Blu-ray. A workaround would be nice for other regions though.

Well having different versions for the same region has certainly been done with DVD so I expect it'll be done with BD as well, much more frequently I suspect since Japan is involved. In particular Alliance released their own version of a handful of films on DVD in Canada that were released by Buena Vista in the States.

Universal uses alot of apple editing programs. It would be nice to see apple throw a little pressure into the situation. I am sure it won't be long before universal see's the light and Goes to the BD rather than stay with the darkside and lose money.

obviously, if true it is great. however, i will not be in the first buying group if it's not the EE

also, they better have different encodes for BR and hd-dud to take advantage of the space differences and bandwidth

No-sell, I don't want the theatrical version, it doesn't really make sense if you haven't read the book, and they miss out too many important scenes, and leave in silly ones, do I really want to see Strider talking to Arwen, no I don't.

Crikey.

I'll rather have the extended edition. This is one movie that can take advantage of the BD-50 disc.

Us BD fans are definitely going to be short changed by Warner/New Line, they will give us the same low bitrate rubbish they have to give HD DVD, and we will get no extras, but there will be 20GB unused on the disc as usual. The sooner HD DVD dies, the sooner we can get properly optimised films. For me that can't happen quickly enough.

Yeah unfortunately this is HD 101. We early adopters are going to pay and pay for media. First they'll have the standard version; then the extended; then the super duper version - over and over. I too can't wait until HD DVD dies so that we can at least get the media optimized for Blu-ray.

Hopefully pricing will be more reasonable by the time the super sized premium optimized versions of the films that we love are released.

I'm not going to bother with this edition at all. I'll rather wait till the extended edition or some sort of Holy-Crap-I-Don't-Believe-This! edition.

You know me, I gotta have it! Even if it is only the theatrical version, I don't know when they will release the EE's, but the supposed TrueHD 7.1 would be a sonic treat until they release the EE's with DTS-HD MA 7.1 or 7.1 PCM @ 24-bit/48kHz (maybe 24/96?) mmmmmmm....... Pelennor Fields in 24-bit/96kHz uncompressed audio...
