Pretty small difference, though Twilight Time aren't the best encoders out there either. Probably identical in motion either way.

That's not a small difference at all. You're talking an increase of 25% bandwidth for the video bitrate and over 40% for audio. That can make a huge difference in the hands of a skilled encoder.

Got my copy of the limited edition in the UK yesterday. Great release - the 1958 version seems to be the Criterion edition - starts with the Criterion logo and has the same extras. Watched the 88 version last night - still really enjoyable, the 80's did see some superior remakes of 50's sci-fi what with this, The Thing and The Fly.

Where are you seeing that difference in the video? I see bitrates and file sizes that are near identical. I'm not the best techie guy though, so feel free to explain if I am wrong.

Video bitrates of 20 MB/PS vs 24.98MB/PS despite overall file size and bitrate being similar (mainly because part of the TT's overall bitrate goes to isolated score and their bizarre decision to lossleslly encode commentaries).

That's pretty cheap for something coming from the other side of the planet, it's hard to find any US site that's not Amazon that ships to Australia for less than $30.

Mine arrived here in the US yesterday, I have number 646. I love the art on the slipcover so I'm glad I ordered it.

Onya, GODHOOD!

Thanks for the response, too, when I asked about pink covers a couple of pages back. I haven't pursued it, because the shipping would be as much as a new BD, but I may yet relent ...

Sorry folks.. bad news. The Blob (Umbrella).. has either had a big dose of DNR, or it's just a poor encode. I think it's the exact same print/encode Germany used, but umbrella did something to it. Twilight (US) still wins.

I didn't bother doing any more than these ones, difference is pretty clear. But if you want any specific comparisons, shout out. GUTTED. We really shouldn't be getting 'HD' quality like this. I know SimonSherry works for Umbrella, but damn dude, this is disappointing.. please tell Umbrella about this. Consumers will not be happy.

Did some direct comparisons to the DE Blu-Ray.. The top images are from the German release. These are PNG images, not JPEG. Speaks for itself really..

And i know that the German release is probably more Noise than Grain, but I'd rather have Noise than waxy images imo.

Getting sick of buying sub-par releases. This wasn't exactly on the cheap end of the scale either. $AU29.98 + Postage.

Did some searching.. what I think this is, is Macroblocking. Sent en email to Umbrella. Don't expect a response though, I vented.

I went against my better judgement and bought this from deepdiscount. It was only like 16 bucks and so I will not feel too terrible if the PQ isn't that great. Better than nothing I guess.

I've just grabbed the DE screenshot from CapsOHolic, so just ignore that they adjusted the stretch so it matches the US. It's identical again to our AU.

US

AU

DE

They are getting better, maybe it's just those first particular scenes that have the macroblocking in the local release.

I thought that was pretty cheap for a new release. Guess I got lucky and someone put the wrong price sticker on it lol - can't complain!
Wait... only $10 for the Blu Ray? Damn, nice pick up. That was certainly a mistake - it's supposed to be $19.98.

I just picked up the DVD yesterday - I would have loved to get the Blu with Simon's gorgeous artwork but when you're comparing $24 (after 20% discount) for the Blu to only $8 for the DVD, it's an easy decision for me. Shame this one wasn't as cheap as the recent Reanimator and From Beyond releases.
