Black & White Lives on Blu-ray

Being a fan of old B&W films, I was really wondering if Blu HD would bring anything to the table worth noting or if I should just resolve myself to upscaled DVD's. I just watched 'The Longest Day' on Blu and I have to say, I am VERY impressed. The details and sharpness are just as impressive as they are in color films and really add a depth that greatly enhanced the viewing experience. Many of the set pieces looked like amazing BW photographs that suddenly came to life.

I'm really fired up about this now. Here's hoping the studios bring out some other classic catalog titles and quit wasting time on crap like 'Beer League'. Bring on 'The Third Man'!

I agree 100%. The Longest day is the worst case of DNR abuse. The BD movie is an embarrasment at this point.

Not making excuses for it... Just wondering how it is compared to the DVD version?

I keep forgetting what a bunch of techno-geeks you guys are around here. I can see, I have eyes, I am most familiar with the original DVD and it is soft and blurry by comparison. I guess if something isn't thick with film grain, it doesn't pass muster. Jeepers what a bunch of cranks.

I was quite excited when I found out Metropolis was getting put on Blu (with "lost" footage, no less), and Criterion jumped on board.

To get an idea of how good black and white can look on blu-ray, just put in one of your favourite demo disks, and the turn the colors right down on your tv.
