Yep and yet another Universal title. Universal Australia have now decided it’s the DVD only route for anything that doesn’t make a lot of money during its cinema release.

The US Blu Ray for Tar is region free + you get a DVD copy as well (probably locked to region 1).

Or there's a BD copy with the 4K which is region-free by default, and then the Digital code can be easily sold to one of those strange people who actually want to spend money on cloud data access.

That’s f*cked up. If she wins the Oscar, I hope they reconsider.

It’s a sad state of affairs. There is sweet f*ck all in the BD release page for Australia and not one 4K release after Black Panther 2. Even Studio Canal’s “Classics Remastered” are always BD.

I guess I should count my lucky stars that The Fabelmans is getting a 1080pBD release, which I won’t buy, since I will import the 4K. Things are truly fu€ked up in this country. Went to buy Strange World on 4K and the clerk said “Did you watch it on DizNee Pus?” I wanted to say “No, blind buy. I just like to watch films in the best quality PQ/AQ available”, but instead, I told a half-truth to make some light banter “Collecting these for my daughter”.

And it sucks even harder when a lot of streaming content doesn’t get a physical release (at least Amazon, Hulu, Paramount, HBO Max and the Peacock aren’t as obtuse as Disney and Netflix). Whatever happened to Stranger Things S3 on BD/4K or even The Clone Wars final season getting a BD release.

Either way, this headline from late last year quietly makes me have some hope that BD/4K releases will continue to flourish, in the US at least.

I saw The Fabelmans twice theatrically, and I'm grateful that it isn't DVD only here, so I'll definitely be picking up the local BD release. I'll probably grab the 4K in the future when my set-up is equipped for UHD, and when global imports aren't as damaging to my wallet (which is basically fck all, but I make it work).

Also regarding streaming content on BD, I'd love to some Netflix/Disney+ content come to physical (even DVD would be cool, just for the novelty). Glass Onion, The Mandolorian, GDT's Pinocchio, and Bardo (I can see Criterion possibly doing the last two) are a few of the titles on my wishlist.

EDIT: Speaking of streaming content on BD/4K

Good to know All Quiet on The Western Front (a Netflix joint) is getting a physical release and a UHD release as well. Sweet.

Another shocker here (DVD only in Australia), available in 11 other countries on BD.

I think it might have been mentioned earlier in this thread that Tar might be DVD only here. However, I think Universal just might change it’s mind, considering it had a better opening in theatrical opening in Australia then the US. So far, the box office total is tracking at just shy of $1,000,000.

If Universal goes by their own logic of whatever does well at the Aussie box office gets a Blu-Ray, we might even get a UHD. At least it will save me importing the title.

The list of Aussie Blu-Ray releases is sad, to say the least, this February.
Apart from BP2: Wakanda Forever and Strange World UHD (the only 2 UHD titles released in Feb) and She Said on 1080pBD, there is nothing else I am interested in.
The only prevalent releases are anime, schlock horror or old ‘80 flicks.

March doesn’t fair much better. With the exception of the release of Banshees of Insherin and maybe one or two others (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”).
And the only 4K release, a Rocky box set. Lyle, Lyle Crocodile IS out on Blu, but would rather import the 2160pBD, if I’m buying.

Essentially, Australia’s Blu-Ray market is now truly f*cked. While the US keeps adding tens of UHD titles monthly (both new and catalogue titles), and also TV on Blu-Ray continues to get some classics released (e.g. Cheers).

What the f*ck happened in Australia. Bunch of technical savages in this country.

Unfortunately $1,000,000 box office for Tar isn't going to considered successful enough for Universal to release this on anything but DVD. Violent Night - which surprise surprise was also from Universal - made a little over $2.5 million at our box office and only got a DVD release. And in other bad news - the She Said blu ray was cancelled in Australia - DVD only now. And the distributor of that film - yep you guessed it, it's Universal.
