Received a shipping confirmation e-mail from JB but since I live in the US I'll be waiting a while hopefully it won't be more than two weeks.

It adds to the discussion about buying practices, blind buys and first release versions. Sometimes, you blink and you miss it. |

Just watched the interview with Chuck Russell on Blob 88, and enjoyed his manner and information a great deal. I really would have liked to hear a full commentary track from him.
I was pleased to hear him mention that one of his favourite sequences from the film was the phone booth outside the diner -- that's always been mine as well. But I never would have picked the actor playing Shawnee Smith's pharmacist dad as the guy from Eraserhead -- that was a surprise! |

I don't know how to upload the images here large enough to be useful but still within the site's size limits. Comparing them, though, I'm willing to bet the OZ release is based on the same transfer as the DE release. The contrast, colour and brightness of image are pretty much identical between the OZ and DE. For the most part, the US captures look a little overbright to me, but I'm wary of judging by screen caps alone. I don't know the actual file sizes on the other two releases. Personally, I'm pretty happy with the OZ release, but I'll admit to being delighted just to have it at all, and also admit that the only thing I have to compare it with directly is the DVD. But I have to doubt that anyone who already has the DE release would see this as an upgrade. As I mentioned above, the OZ release has a filmed interview with Chuck Russell talking about making the film that the DE and US releases don't have, but misses out on the commentary and isolated score tracks of the Twilight Time release. If you're looking at the double-pack, Blob 58 uses the Criterion Collection transfer, with the same extras, and the Larry Hagman sequel as a bonus in SD resolution. |

I just watched the Twilight Time release tonight when this thread made me think to do so. I don't think it's too bright at all, but it might depend on your gamma settings and preferences. Either way they're all the same gorgeous master with minor differences.

But really, my reply was mostly to indicate that the OZ transfer looks more like the DE release, if screencaps are to be believed, rather than the US TT release. As I understood it, that was the main focus of the question. They may all be derived from the same transfer, but the end result doesn't look quite the same across the board. I'm not familiar with the specific compression issues in the DE release -- hence my reference to the comparative file sizes -- but bottom line: I personally see no problems with the OZ release. I'm happy with it. ![]() |

I mean, I was agreeing with you it's brighter, just saying my personal opinion was that the TT looked great. I don't know why you're writing like I contradicted you or something. Gamma is definitely a factor, unless you're pro-calibrated it could impact your preference.
In any case like I said they're all the same master, which is a gorgeous one. If I didn't have the TT I would have gotten the Umbrella for sure. |

No mate, I was just refocussing on the US vs DE vs OZ question, because that's what I was initially replying to.
But I don't agree gamma settings are an issue, unless one was using a different setting for each disc. In any case, we obviously both appreciate having this in HD at last! ![]() |
