I wonder if that explains why the first movie was not released on DVD in Japan when the TV series and second movie were.

It might be. I'm also under the impression that the movie isn't very well liked in Japan, but I could be wrong about that.

Dybex has picked up the French BD/DVD rights to the series, OVA and the first film: https://twitter.com/Alex_Jetblack/st...99433993449473

If Dynit were to pick it up, I would gladly double dip.

And same here. Should be here Thursday. I’m tempted to create some screenshot comparisons for a few of the OVAs as well. The movie has a different aspect ratio, slightly cropped, from the old DVD. 1.66:1 to 1.78:1, I believe.

I know I'm like one of five people on the planet that liked the second movie (yes, licensing hell, I know.) but it seems misleading saying "Follow the Kimagure Orange Road to the very very end!" Anyone outside of hardcore fans of the series would think this is, well, the very very end. But is nice to at least get these in HD.

Get over it. It seems like you're stuck on certain points and things, and won't get over them even if there have been good explanations on them.

I'll proudly say I'm one of those 5 since I think the 2nd movie is great. But, I do agree also that it's not really essential to the story. So I dont really have a problem with discotek saying this.

I'm hopeful it will still come out, 60's batman was in listening hell forever and it came out.

I decided to create a few screenshot comparisons for the OVA/Movie set as well. In the end, I went with three shots for each OVA and three for the movie. In a few of these, there is some moderate aliasing present for the AnimEigo shots. You can ignore that, as it is artificially introduced by VirtualDub. I thought I selected frames that didn’t exhibit the issue but I noticed a few still got through after I bicubically resized the images.

The movie looks zoomed in stuff around the edges and top and bottom are missing from the Discotek's BD.

Yeah, the HD transfer for the film is cropped. I discussed it on the previous page.

The DVD of the movie looks to be at 1.66:1 and the BD at 1.85:1

Now, 1.85:1 was probably the aspect ratio at which the film was projected in Japanese theaters, but, and this is just me guessing, it was framed in such a way as to be shown in both 1.33:1 (4:3) and 1.85:1 (16:9). This was a common thing with some anime films (the Dragon Ball films done on cels were made this way), and even some live action films were shot with this in mind. I highly advise watching this video about the Criterion Collection release of On the Waterfront- a film shot that way. Criterion included 3 versions on their BD release, each with it's own aspect ratio so as to not make anyone unhappy with their restoration;

Now you'll notice that 1.66:1 is generally the "best" way to display that film, and I bet that is the same for the KOR film.

Again, me just guessing.
