If either is an important factor, then go with the reduced price 615/617. I own the 75" 615 and find it to be an amazing TV! |

How do regular DVDs and Blu rays look on this TV?
Since I still use a 1080 Oppo Blu ray player I'm worried I'll be taking a step back in PQ with all my discs. |

so, why would you think the 4k tv is going to make your 480p & 1080p discs take a step back in PQ, please explain that to me.

A 4K TV needs to blow up the 1080p picture to fill the screen. https://www.techradar.com/news/4k-up...urn-hd-into-4k https://www.cnet.com/news/can-4k-tvs...p-look-better/ Here's an excerpt from CNET. "...Just because a TV is 4K doesn't mean it has a good scaler built-in. On cheaper 4K TVs, for instance, you probably save money because of a sub-par scaler. So in these cases, 1080p content probably won't look any better (and possibly worse). Sadly, as far as scaling performance is concerned, you usually get what you pay for..."~ CNET |

yep, we knew about up-scaling, but, you didn't say that is what your concern was.
i'd recommend you go and look at the tv with a 480p & 1080p source to it and determine if you like what you see or you don't. i have watched DVD's & HD Blu-Ray discs and they looked great to me; but, that's me. we can't tell you what it's going to look like to you. i don't care what cnet or anyone else had to say, unless they were using your eyes, it shouldn't matter too much to you. and as you would say, it's called auditioning. ![]() good luck and keep us posted. |

??? My post was clear..."how do DVDs a Blu rays look on this TV with a regular Blu ray player..." Of course it's subjective but I don't have the opportunity of auditioning the TV which is why I'm here asking actual owner opinions. "... i have watched DVD's & HD Blu-Ray discs and they looked great to me..." That's all I wanted to hear to continue my research on this TV. Thanks. |

Ok, the end of my saga. Ended up with the 55” R615 from Best Buy for $370 plus tax (used $30 in rewards i had). I couldn’t justify the $200 difference for the 2019 model, even if its an overall better TV.
Anyway, happy with the TV so far. Definitely an improvement over my 2017 Vizio M XLED. Playing Gears of War 5 on the TCL was awesome, the game looked so damn good. |

Nice. I played Jedi Fallen Order on my PS4 and it looked great as well with HDR.
I watched a little of Spider Man Far From Home thru iTunes and it looked a little weird, like black crush maybe, so will have to play around with the settings a bit. Any recommendation on what you’re using settings wise? |

I have my backlight at 33 Contrast lowered to 92 Color raised to 52 Sharpness at 20 (I find that this is actually where it represents "0" sharpness) Everything else is exactly as RTINGS settings. I mostly stream/watch UHD movies on mine. I have my plasma professionally calibrated, but feel that the TCL is fine without one...for now. |

I've been kinda messing with the settings still since I've gotten it. Though I adjust it every other month or so. I kept the Backlight at 50 till I changed it to 46 Today, kinda still trying to figure it out as it is my first 4K TV ever in general.
The RTings Site's settings are a good recommend, but they mention it was for HDR10 and not Dolby Vision. Playing games with HDR looked amazing on the set, Jedi: Fallen Order for the most part. When going into clips on youtube it just looked weird to me after the fact, makes a difference for that game. I have the 55r615. |
