Movie poster questions?

I'm no poster aficionado, so these might sound like amateur questions. I'm trying to deck my room out with a bunch of 40 x 27 posters. About 10 of them. I have no need for originals, definitely not paying those prices. But why are so many reproductions badly done? Not all of them are and I guess it depends on who does it, but I've gotten a couple where the the colors have a faded and dark tint to them. I assume this is a reason so many people care about originals. I also assume it's why these are cheap to produce, but why? I don't know anything about printing, but I just don't understand why it would be so much more expensive to get the colors right. And if that is really all it is, then why don't I see more expensive reproductions being sold, that are of higher quality?



Also, most posters are easy to find, but why do they not make reproductions of certain ones? Can't find this one anywhere.

Sorry I just saw your posting and wanted to chime in. Original movie posters aren't made for public collecting/sale, they are intended for theatrical distribution only which is why you see originals sometimes fetching a lot of money, naturally the older a poster is, and the more popular the title is, the more it can command. Condition and other factors are also key when it comes to pricing.

But don't always assume an original is out of your budget. Sure, they can be expensive, but that depends on where you look. I have been in this industry for 20 years, and take the original four styles for the first Lord of the Rings film. What I charge for a complete set of four, my competitors charge nearly three times the price. Why? Because most have flashy websites, employees to pay, and carry an endless amount of titles. I don't and I do it all myself so I can afford to offer mine for a lot less.

Another example is the Dark Knight teaser style "B" known as the "Why So Serious?" style. Tons of fakes of that poster out on the market, most who have mint condition unused originals are around the $250-$350 price range. I am in the $150 price range.

So prices can fluctuate depending on where you look. But those are just two examples, don't think that "all" originals are that expensive, many are in the $20-$40 price range, and you will find some poster sites selling "reproductions" for the same prices so I would ask "Would you want an original for the same price as what you would find a reproduction?" Most would say "I want the original!" since it has value and can appreciate over time. A reproduction has no value with regards to collectibility.

There are those who don't care about collecting and simply want a cheaper more affordable reprint. I have nothing against those people whatsoever, I choose not to carry reprints because I cater to collectors both causal and more serious. Reprints serve their purpose, especially when they are licensed official reprints, not "print under the table knock-offs" which do, unfortunately exist.

That Beauty and the Beast style you referred is a very sought after original movie poster. Disney is extremely protective of their copyrights so those who do product unlicensed reprints are risking a great deal. Generally you can find reprints, but they usually are found in mall stores, and are more than likely going to be 24x36 inches, as opposed to the originals which measure 27x40.

I bought a poster on eBay and before they shipped it I got one of those eBay e-mails showing they were listing another one with the exact same pictures. The poster was supposed to be an authentic movie theater poster. I got the poster and compared it to the photos. It is very close to the picture down to where the folds hit and seemingly random bumps on the paper, but there is a piece of tape on the poster in the eBay photo that is not on what I got. I am Messaging the seller and their sentence structure is all over the place. They don't address all my questions. In my original Message I told them I was possibly interested in 2 other posters and they completely ignored it. Just odd all around. Ignoring the chance to sell 3 posters instead of 1 made me think that they don't care about money, so that lent more to it being authentic in my mind.

No, I'm not gullible. They have a perfect rating with 10,000's of ratings.

If there is anyone who knows details on mid 80's era authentic theatrical posters and is willing to help, please send me a PM.
