I just watched this today. My only real complaint is that you can't turn off the Italian subtitles when watching in Russian. Luckily, the Oppo 203/205 can play alternate subs from a USB drive at the same time as these forced subs from the disc. One trick I noticed is to go into the player's settings and move the subtitle display location as far down as possible before starting the movie, select the alternate subs from the USB once the movie starts, then reset the subtitles to the position that you like by holding down the "Subtitle" button for 3 seconds. Doing so will put the forced subs mostly off the screen and the alternate subs will be in the normal location.

Akira Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala (1975) will be released in Spain in 2020.

Here's hoping it's had a restoration! They don't mention anything like that in the features list. |

I got my copy this morning and had a quick look through different scenes. Unfortunately it's not blu-ray quality but I'm very happy I have a copy of this wonderful film. It is Russian DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 with subtitles. The surround sound in a forest scene was convincing.
My best description would be a cleaned up copy of an early DVD. |

I compared the Australian versus the Italian disc last night for the first half hour of the film. The Australian disc is consistently darker than the Italian one and the detail suffers a little bit as a result, but I prefer the consistency of the Australian disc because it doesn't flicker as much.
The video bit rate of the Australian disc seems to be upper 30s while the Italian disc is lower 30s. The audio of the Australian disc also sounds better (double the bit rate) and there are unforced English subs available, whereas the Italian disc has forced Italian subs when listening to the Russian audio. I used a known region B disc (Eureka's Nosferatu) with my Oppo 205 to confirm the Australian disc will play both region A and B. The Italian disc is locked to region B. I don't have the Spanish disc to compare, but until this movie gets properly restored to hopefully be put in some big Kurosawa boxed set at some point in the future, the Australian disc is the one I'd use to watch this film. |

It looks similar to the BD but with the usual Youtube compression. I don't think any version of Dersu has been restored.

This i indeed quite a soft transfer and somewhere between a proper DVD quality and a poor blu-ray. This is of course just how it is going to be until this film gets a restoration and might even be quite a feat to achieve. However I would not set this release aside for that. It is mostly consistent quality throughout with healthy colors and does not have much noticeable downfalls due to dirt or scratches. Picture is soft. It will allways be soft but it will be a notch more detailed if it gets a proper restoration for sure. I am pleased that we got what we got. A nice slip and artwork and a nice step up from the DVD. Of course I got my hopes up that there was some proper hd transfer they got their hands on but I was certainly not expecting it so just to own this in a watchable state is a major thing for me. Don't let the transfers downfalls stop you from getting it. There are a lot of benefits you get from this release and this is a film you should not skip.

I tried to watch the Kino DVD on my jvc projector and it looked horrible. The Imprint bluray, while not perfect looked very good projected on my 2.40:1 screen. Very pleased to be able to watch and enjoy this again. Position of the subtitles being half in the black letterboxing on the disc however required me to raise them up a bit with my oppo bluray player so they weren't cut off on the bottom.
