Yes! I just pre-ordered on Amazon. I've been waiting too long for this. Now we just need My Neighbors the Yamadas on Blu-ray here in the US.

I was holding out hope they'd do a dub just for the BD but I guess not... oh well, if they ever dub it, that'll be when I get it.

I wonder if it will be region locked like Only yesterday or unlocked like The Tale of the Princess Kaguya depending on if it is or isn't will determine if I will buy.

I have it from the JP Cat Returns DVD but that's a great bonus.

The Ghibli dubs have actually been quite good to excellent from both Disney and GKids. Opinions vary, of course, but I was quite satisfied with all of the dubs except for The Wind Rises -- that dub just didn't gel with me. The others I found just fine.

To the point where I personally feel disappointed that this one isn't getting dubbed. I guess this movie isn't that popular to justify the costs. I'll probably rent this one to see if I like it or not.

The only Ghibli dub I hate is the American Arrietty dub.

What don't you like about it, or prefer about the Japanese track?

They made Arrietty rude and changed characters name and added a Disney channel song to the end credits. The UK dub is a way better English dub.

I don't remember the Disney dub of Arrietty very well (I've only seen it twice), but aside from the added in closing line, I didn't find anything particularly grating about that dub. I wouldn't say it's my favorite of the Disney dubs but it didn't rub me the wrong way that The Wind Rises did.

You mean like they did with Ponyo? They're using a primarily Disney cast for an anime aimed at children, of course they're going to do that. I just wish they'd have put the UK dub as a bonus, apart from Amy Poehler, I prefer the UK actors.

So that justifies what Disney did?

I'm so glad this is being released finally in America. I'm glad now that I didn't buy the $70 import. I have always liked this movie--it was directed by Tomomi Mochizuki, who is known for depicting teenage life in anime like Kimagure Orange Road and Here is Greenwood, and it has a similar nostalgic feel.

$70? The Taiwanese release (which does have English subs) was about half that price. Even the Japanese release only costs $57 shipped from Amazon Japan these days.

70 sounds like an ebay price.

No, but it's Disney. Do you think they're not going to do it? Might as well ask a dog not to chew a bone.

The thing is that whatever minor deviations the dubs may have have to be approved by Ghibli in the first place. I don't agree with all the occasional changes, but as long as they were approved and not done with no involvement from Ghibli (like what was done with Nausicaa's first edit) then... well, I really don't see the issue here. If they're OK with the dubs, they're OK with the dubs. At least none of them veer into Warriors of the Wind territory.

I thought we agreed never to speak of that one again.

They've always put their DC stars in the dubs, how else did they expect mainstream US audiences to invest time and attention in these films? Ma and Pa Wal-Mart Shopper probably never even heard about Ghibli or Miyazaki before Spirited Away won the Oscar.
