4/5

I went into this documentary very much being the old man on the porch screaming at the kids to get off my lawn. I don’t get Billie Eilish’s appeal, her music is strange to me and I was flabbergasted at her rise to fame with that brand of whisper singing. I’m 32, not exactly her target audience but I know people OLDER than me who love her. So I sat down to give this a shot, open minded. I really just wanted to understand the appeal.

I came out of it actually liking her as a person and really respecting her drive and creative process. This documentary excels in so many ways. First off, it’s refreshing to see a “child star” (I put it in quotations because she started much later than the usual child stars we think of but she’s still a child) with parents who are actively nurturing to her and protecting her from being taken advantage of. We have seen so many child stars be taken advantage of, exploited and suffer as adults with the ramifications from their childhoods that their parents disregarded. Secondly, loved seeing her creative process with Finneas. It’s clear those two have a very interconnected bond and are like yin and yang. Fascinating to see those two craft her album in their childhood bedroom. Finally, her bond with her fans is genuine and I think to her detriment at times. You can tell, being a teenager, she goes through the same things as her fans so when you have fans dumping their emotions on her during the meet and greets, Billie clearly takes them onto herself and it’s manifesting inside her in a negative way.

It’s a fascinating look at the rise of pop phenom. Going from tumblr to selling out arenas and amphitheater’s in a matter of 8 months is a lot and this shows it in its raw form.

Now let me go blast “Therefore I Am”.

Yeah but she's annoying, and kinda ugly too.

Can't believe that's actually a comment here regarding a documentary. Admittedly I didn't have any interest in watching it, but I went back to read all the comments.

I'm gonna watch it with a vengeance lol

She's not really ugly, but I find her to be rather talentless. Nothing about what she does is unique or remarkable.

By all means, don't watch it if you don't like her music, but the low blows at her looks are just ridiculous.

Right? How sickening is it that these grown ass middle-aged men are insulting the “looks” of a 19 year old girl?

I get it. Her music isn’t for everyone. And certainly commenters on here are nowhere near her target audience.

Her net worth is somewhere near $60 million. That’s impressive for anyone her age. All of which was catapulted into the stratosphere when she was discovered on SoundCloud at 14.

Rather than criticizing how someone looks or trash their music if it’s not in their tastes, they should approach it with the perspective of how successful Billie launched her career into becoming one of the top artists of modern music.

These are the exact kinds of comments that made Kellie Marie Tran leave twitter.

The guys would save us all a lot of time if they just hung around outside high schools and told the girls as they were coming out whether they were good looking enough to waste a movie or a documentary on, or if their music excites them enough to justify trying a music career in future.

Did you think the runtime was excessive? It is in my queue and when I went to watch it this weekend, I thought to myself "She's 19. Why does this need to be 2 hours and 21 minutes?" and instead watched some of my back-logged discs. ANY documentary longer than 90 minutes better have A LOT to say, and tack on an additional 50+ minutes and it better be revelatory. In your opinion did it NEED to be 2:21?

Going into it, I thought the runtime was ridiculous but it actually flies by pretty quickly. There are a few bits that could have been cut and brought it down to under 2 hours but it was enjoyable regardless.

Honestly, I never got what the big deal was about that. Yes, the racism was inexcusably reprehensible but people thought she died when she left Instagram (not twitter). It’s just social media. I’m sure she’s doing a lot better without it. Please don’t tell me we live in South Park now:

There was never even a shred of proof that she was being harassed on instagram. Tran never said she was either. Nobody ever provided any screen caps. I mean we are in a time where if Joe Blow at the meat packing plant said something racist on Myspace 15 years ago, it will be found and used to get him fired today. Yet somehow Tran who had over 200k followers, was being harassed by vile racists and misogynists without anyone seeing it happen or her even saying it happened. Amazing! All of the stories that were ran about it, were all sourced from a single tweet by some random unofficial Star Wars site. But that was good enough because because the people who wanted to push the narrative that anyone who disliked Last Jedi was some toxic manbaby, just ran with their confirmation bias.

And I retracted that ugly thing a few posts back. Annoying? Yes. But beauty remains in the eye of the BEER holder so we'll go with that.

I wondered about all that. No proof. Just hearsay and a few Twitter Wokescolds having a bad morning. Hmmm. Figures.

Either way.... you:
