Default Several combo HD-DVD/Blu-ray players for $500 by end of 2007 (I totally disagree)

This article is predicting that a wide range of multi-format players will hit the market at current HD DVD prices by the end of 2007. So far LG is the only one making universal players. If this is true and we see a flood of universal players around $500 by the end of the year then both HD-DVD and BLU-RAY would be at peace and coexist just like Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio does.

I disagree I don’t think we will see several universal players for around $500 by the end of 2007. I would be interested in purchasing such a player. If Universal would just release on BLU-RAY the war would be over and no need for everyone to make a universal players.

Last thing I heard is that Samsung canceled their plans for a combo player and was only going to do BLU-RAY. If Samsung comes out with a combo player then several other companies will also.

I might be tempted by a 'universal' player if it supported the things I want from BD. I will likely have to get a new player to cover the PiP etc and internet connection maybe (don't like that as a concept but networked PS3 has some advantages). If the player did HD DVDs also, I could maybe retire the A1.

Of course if a PS3 covers all those bases, I prolly won't bother getting more hardware...!

If the Industry decides to go with several companies making universal players for sale for $500 I would be very interested in order to purchase Universal studio's movies in HDTV. I just disagree in the time frame, if HD-DVD survives 2008 would be more realistic for these players to appear at this price point mentioned in the article.

I think I commented about this as divertionary tactics. Now that in this week there are reports that BD standalones are doing good, pop goes the reason to delay buying one.

When will people finally realize the only reason that universal players are needed is (ironically) Universal?

The stubborness of one studio is sufficient to build a market?!

Bottom line: Combo players are more expensive that BD-only players. So, a combo under $500 means a BD standalone considerably under $500. Simple logic.

Sheer waste of time, money, and material. I don't think any of these will see the light of day, especially if current trends hold, let alone continue upwards for BD as I and many others expect.

How are the LG Dual sales doing, by the way? The answer to that question can tell you a lot right off the bat.

It's that simple. First sign of one Universal BD disc and that's the end right there.

Either this and/or if MS even backed down an inch, since we all know they really don't give two hoots about HD-DVD past using it as a smokscreen to deliberately keep the market divided.

The only reason combos are needed is for the HD DVD fanboys, so that they could argue that they at least have some form of industry support. It is an argumentative point, which serves no real world advantage (especially pricewise, as you pointed out) in the real world. These fanboys already have their Toshibas, so why are they so interested? They expect the neutrals to hop onto combo players, and then "discover" that HD DVD is better?

Universal players are a waste of money. Just another cash grab that the manufacturers. This kinda player is built for the indecisive consumer who doesn't want to wait or take a gamble. Having "Universal" (Pun Intended) players will just prolong a format war.

Who the hell wants to have blue and crimson cases mixing in their movie library?!?

Will there be a need to release a universal player (I thought Toshiba was already making players for Universal)? Once Universal throws the towel in - which I suspect is getting closer by the day. There were no universal players for laser disc & DVD and there were a few 1000 LD titles. On the other hand if HD-DVD collapses, how much will the royalties cost for HD-DVD? not much.

HD DVD is dead in the water, which is why Samsung cancelled their plans for a combo player.

LG are foolish to think there is a market for their player. There's not even a market for combo PC drives either. Who wants to buy two different HD storage discs?

If Blu-ray dominates everything after Q1 this year (January-March), then I don't see the point of these combo players at all. When that happens, I predict that such moves for universal players would only be USELESS.

Yup. I've seen a few print ads for it and that's about it.

Longshot: I agree with you. 500 or so would be my most generous guess as well on actual sales.
