How was the WiiU a colossal failure?

13 million units sold after 4 years of being on the market? Yeah, that definitely classifies as a colossal failure! Come on Nintendo fans! Get your heads out of the sand!

It surpassed Dreamcast in sales so that's gotta count for something.

I'm not saying it was or wasn't a failure. I honestly don't follow what's sucsessful or not so I was just curious. Thanks for all the responses.

And Dreamcast was a better console IMO.

There are fans and then there are fanboys. People who blindly defend Nintendo to the fullest are the latter, I'm the former.

Fair enough.

GameCube was also a better console than the Wii U. Despite that GC/DC are two gens in the past they're still overall much better.

The Wii U is what it is, a very niche console with a very selected amount of games. Collectors hoard games but as a gamer-then-collector I find myself unable to enjoy the console too much. I already played the majority of its library and it wasn't that great except for a few.

Is the criteria of a good console just what games were released? That would seem to be how to rate the game selection... not the console itself.

The wiiU, as a console, is better than the gamecube. If we are actually talking about the console

Yes, in terms of hardware the Wii U is factually better but as for the games.. nah. So what Wii U has an HD Mario Tennis game, it friggin' sucks! I'd rather just play Mario Power Tennis (GameCube ver.) on my Wii.

I've to admit the graphics still look great even though they're in SD, I suppose that's due to GameCube's technology and the design/animation/graphics.

To me I love the Wii U as Nintendo's titles have made the system worth it to me and still keeps me playing.

I do love the Gamecube more though and miss a lot of those games, I really should plug my GC in soon. Not having a Luigi's Mansion Wii U was a total miss for Nintendo IMO.

The GC was pretty awesome. Still think Double Dash is by far the best Mario Kart

A failure, sure.

But imo it also depends on how much money you lost, because that's what actually matters for the company. And when you check that, then Wii U was a failure but there were way way worse failures. Calling it "colossal", well fine - but what do you call it when it's 5 or more times worse than that?

Afaik Nintendo never sold consoles below their costs (which actually is a pretty smart thing to do) until 3DS + Wii U and they also almost always try to keep them cheap - which they also didn't do for 3DS + Wii U. Those were 2 of their mistakes. But again, at least they weren't $350+ below costs.

That's probably also the reason why Nintendo doesn't drop the price of the Wii U that much (although I got mine for around 100 pounds 2 years ago). They know that it wouldn't really help (see Gamecube) and they would then lose more money, because the gamepad simply is not cheap.

Thirteen million AND ONE. I bought one for Xmas.

We wanted to play Lego Dimensions and needed a console, and with stacks of Wii games already piled up here at the house it made more sense to stay in the same gaming eco-verse than to get one of the more mainstream consoles and make our obsolete collection permanently obsolete.

Like the Dreamcast. That we also have.

If Nintendo put the titles that are on their 3Ds onto the wii u instead, they wouldn't be in trouble. Had remakes of Majora, Ocarina, new Luigis Mansion, Pokemon, etc. all those titles would have made the console a blockbuster success.

And that's what they are trying to do with the NX, well putting them on both It's gonna be great. /George Lucas

Looking forward to E3 since this is going to be the focus of Nintendo's show.

Agreed. I'm still pissed that the Ocarina remaster is 3DS only. Rediculous that these fantastic games are intentionally withheld from the console.
