Japan Latest hit anime "K-ON!" Blu-ray outsells DVD by over 400%, #2 BD in Japan

http://mainichi.jp/enta/mantan/news/...00043000c.html (an official English version of the article might be available later, if not then there are translation sites such as Google Translate).

The first volume of K-ON! (wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-ON!) has sold 33,000 copies on Blu-ray in its first week, more than the #1 selling Blu-ray last year, Macross F vol. 1 which sold 22,000 copies. The DVD of K-ON! Vol. 1 only sold 8,000 copies.

The #1 selling Blu-ray is Evangelion: 1.11, which sold 49,000 copies.

That's good news indeed. I think little by little blu-ray will overtake DVD sales in Japan, starting of course with otaku-oriented titles such as K-ON. They are always in the lead when it comes to buying new releases and new tech. I'm sure the last ones to convert to Blu-ray will be Japanese and Korean drama series, typically bought (rather rented) by housewives. Well, I guess otaku are at least good for one thing: pushing new tech.

Also, I think those pink blu-ray cases helped push K-ON sales on blu-ray

Great to hear! Here's hoping the rest of Asia follows suit, but of course that will take awhile.

YEAH...give it up for the otaku groups in Japan for pushing blu! See, now us Western otaku fans have gotta follow suit, the more that we can drive the blu anime sales, hopefully the more titles and choices we'll get to see.

Not just on Blu-ray but also the soundtracks have been amazing on the Oricon charts. In my 16 years of following the Oricon Charts weekly, 2009 is surprising to see anime-based soundtracks or single releases show up in the top 10, let alone in the top 3 and stay for weeks. So, I'm really interested in finding out why this series is so hot!
