^ Yep. Noticed that, too. So, forced DV is not global, it's selectively forced.

It seems mkv does indeed occupy a privileged position in the sony universe.
BTW, is Downtown Abbey S1 BD the only misbehaving disc in your possession? Did you get a chance to play any of the m2ts files in the bdmv folder?

Downton Abbey S1 is not forced DV at all, 100% SDR as it should be. However, the S6 discs were selectively forced-- the main menu and episodes were in DV, but FBI warnings, PBS previews, the Viking Cruises promo were not. The LOTR:FOTR:EE BDs were 100% forced DV for all content that I saw on those discs. I have no idea as to why the behavior is so different between these discs.

Interesting. So not all the m2ts files are treated in the same way.
Is your Downtown Abbey BD region B?

Do you have S2? Or any other 1080i discs you can test?

I think you hit the nail on the head! S1 of Downton is indeed in 1080i/30, which might very well be the reason it's not in forced DV. The menus, PBS promos, FBI warning, are all 1080i/30, too, which is why they are also not affected. S2:E1 is 1080p/24, and DV is forced on.

Therein lies the Sony DV bug.

Good catch gentlemen, and there's more.
Tried an old Nogi46 BD on the x700, and forced DV was off. However, HDR was turned on when playing the individual m2ts file.

So does this have the same freezing issue as the 700 and the 800?

I seem to remember this feature was omitted from the US models in favor of something else?

If you use the code FCBLU10OFF during checkout at 220-electronics you can get this player for $386.10 with free shipping and a free 6' HDMI cable with it.

Mine usually freezes at least once while playing a standard blu-ray. Sometimes it's just a few seconds & resumes play while skipping over a few seconds and other times it freezes & has to be unplugged. It's pretty annoying. Weird thing is that it doesn't freeze while playing 4K discs. Tried a factory reset and keep a USB stick connected at all times. Neither made a difference. Fortunately, I still have an old PS3 connected, so I'll just use that for playing blu-rays.

I had the original 800 and picked up the M2 a couple of months ago. I had played all sorts of things over the first 7 weeks and never had a freeze but in the past few days I have had 3. One on a 4k disc and two on standard Blu-rays. I am extremely frustrated that this issue is still happening with the new model.

I really want to love this player as I have a lot of SACD and DVD-Audio discs and the 800s play them all but when it locks up in the middle of a movie I want to throw it down the stairs. Sony really needs to do better, especially for the money.

This thing is a 4k/Blu-ray player first and foremost and that is what it has the hardest time doing.

So my advice is this: If you don't need a universal player and just want a quality UHD/BLu-ray player, buy something else.

And to counterpoint this I use the player every day and never a single freezing issue. Buy with confidence.

And to add to this counterpoint, I have had my X800 for two years and five months, and have yet to experience any problems with it. Like it enough that I just received my new Sony UBP-X800M2 yesterday. Unfortunately, it will be awhile before I get it hooked up though, other things going on....

I have had my x800m2 for 2 weeks now and sometimes my new LG oled keeps saying no signal . you have to power the the sony down and then it comes up . Is that normal ? Also a little jumpy movement in fast action . Are there any adjustments that can be recommended ?

1. Use the two HDMI outputs.
2. Power your TV first, then your pre/pro (receiver) and then the M2.
3. A delay of five seconds between each component "power on" will assure a good HDMI handshake.
4. Set the audio and input of your pre/pro (receiver) accordingly.
5. Bitstream for the M2 (default).
6. A universal programmable remote with all the right settings, audio surround modes, audio/video inputs, delays, order of component "power on", etc. is best.
That means one button press only to have everything communicating and ready to go in 15 seconds. And one button press to shut everything off.
7. Read this thread for more on the proper settings of the M2. Auto is a good starting base for pretty much everything.
8. Video Settings: Direct (from the M2 remote "Options" while a Blu-ray 4K is playing).
