Amazon opts for HD DVD in selling indie films
I was wondering that nobody posted this yet. If I am wrong, and the wrong forum, please move or merge. Quote:

Hmmm...I almost wonder if I should stop doing business with them because of something like this. Of course, if I do that, then that's a rather decent "Blu-Ray influence" that I'd take out of there.

The hardware must've cost a fortune since there's not a lot of HD-DVD burners out there.

Yikes, Amir deigned to post in the AVMS thread on this topic, outside the safety of his insiders hidey-hole.

Hmmm. I've heard of double dipping, but if the master can continuously be updated, it's Nth dipping!
I've no problem with MOD though. BDs could go that route as well and cheaper with the price of hardware and software. If the BDA can move forward with the BD9, then short films can be seen in HD by everyone. Have to wonder why Amazon went with HD-DVD. And why the announcement is not greeted with "Amazon with Toshiba goes MOD" but instead, MS. Must be because AVC is the chosen new HD codec. fuad |

It's good news for HD DVD... but then again considering the lack of burning software and media it seems like this is the only way you'll really see HD DVD-R media.
Someone could do almost the same thing with a couple Lite-on Blu-ray drives. They just wouldn't be able to sell them through Amazon. It's more of a boon for Indie films than it is a boon for HD DVD. |

If you read the AVS items about this, they are only going to be using DVD-9 Discs (which they call HD-9 LOL), and HD15 single layer discs. Why? Because they are going to be using burnable media and a laptop burner. Anyone could do this themselves. Its a sad state of affairs when HD-DVD and Microsoft are begging people to put content out on their platform and using the cheapest possible means to make it happen.

The the 15 GB discs burning at 1x, doing real HD DVD discs would be a slow task.
Since it says 'DVD replicating' I bet they aren't even doing HD15. Ben W has been going on and on about this in the Adobe thread on AVS. He didn't indicate any HD15 capability at this stage. However we do see the HDNet Blu-ray BDR discs at Amazon, do don't feel too left out ![]() |

BD will have a place even if MOD becomes accepted...
when you run out of HD space, where are you going to save the content knowing you will need alot of space on the disc?... BD will come into play here for people who like to keep physical copies movies incase they have to reformat or if they just want to save it... so even in a worst case scenario....BD will be the format for awhile... |
