DC Comics taps Orson Scott Card to write for Superman series, backlash ensues

so I'm sure most of you have heard the row over Card being tapped for the project, with many people upset over his rather strong and vicious comments in the past about LGBT issues, including linking homosexuality to pedophilia and inferring that gay people shouldn't be considered on equal grounds with the rest of society.

Interesting kerfuffle to be sure. I wrote a piece up on my blog that has gotten some good feedback. Thought I'd post it up here. Let me know what you think, and what you think about the whole situation in general.

I'm definitely going to check out your blog when I have a moment later tonight.

It is odd...there are so many things that enter my head about him and the situation. He has made his feelings known to the public and is taking the backlash, as is DC. But, how many creators of comics or generally just other people in the public spotlight haven't made their feelings known publicly about this subject or really ANY hot topic, yet still reap the benefits of popularity and sales and general support?

Make no mistake, I don't support Card in the least bit...but it is generally because I think he sucks. lol But, I don't see why they're calling for his hide or to be tossed off the title before he even wrote an issue.

Unfortunately, it isn't illegal to have irrational hate. Members of the KKK hold down jobs just like all us other 9-5 schmoes. So long as Card's idiotic personal thoughts don't enter his creative writing, I say let the man write.

If it sucks (which it likely will), then he'll get tossed anyway.

Yeah I pretty much made the same argument. I am vehemently opposed to pretty much all he stands for, particularly on this topic (and sci-fi writing...not a fan. lol) but except in extreme cases, I don't typically like the idea of someone losing their jobs because of an opinion they hold, even one I'm strongly opposed to.

I understood when protesters went after Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck's sponsors, because that was really the only recourse and they were perceived as actively pushing hateful rhetoric against groups of people, or specific individuals.

It gets a bit murky with Card, though, because of his position on the board of directors for the National Organization for Marriage which actively lobbies against things like Marriage Equality.

DC has decided to back him for now, but it wouldn't surprise me if tomorrow or next week they decided to back down, which will probably fuel his martyrdom. lol

Isn't Card the fellow that made Ultimate Iron Man into The Sani-Flush Kid, and with a clubfoot, no less? And then that entire run/origin story was ret-conned out as an imaginary tale written by a "fictional" author within the Ultimate Marvel itself.

I know little of the comments you mention; I'm just not a fan of his writing. That alone is enough to get a big ol' "meh" from moi.
