Default Green Lantern Thread

So after spending many years not buying a comic book, I went out last week and picked up a couple things. Some of the things I picked up were were Green Lantern: The New 52 #1-3. Now, I didn't get #0 because I honestly didn't know there was a #0 until a couple days ago. I got to ask, though, does it explain why Hal Jordan was kicked out of the Corps and how Sinestro got his ring back? Or was that establishd in another storyline? Like I said, before last week I hadn't bought a comic in years. Anyways, any insight would be great.

Also, as well as seeing if somebody could answer my questions, I wanted to create this thread to see is there are anymore Lantern fans like me on the website. So we can have a thread of our own and maybe you guys can give me and others more GL comics to check out.

GL didn't really get much of a reboot with the New 52, so you'll have to check out the preceding storylines. Not sure how much of Geoff Johns run you followed, but by trade, they include:

*Green Lantern: Rebirth
*No Fear
*Revenge of the Green Lanterns
*Wanted: Hal Jordan
*Sinestro Corps War (co-written w/Dave Gibbons)
*Green Lantern: Secret Origin
*Rage of the Red Lanterns
*Agent Orange
*Green Lantern: Blackest Night (ties into Blackest Night miniseries)
*Green Lantern: Brightest Day
*War of the Green Lanterns (co-written w/Tony Bedard + Peter Tomasi)
---------- <--- (New 52 relaunch)
*Green Lantern vol. 1 - Sinestro
*Green Lantern vol. 2 - Revenge of the Black Hand

A few notes: There are also volumes of "Green Lantern Corps" and other books to check out if you wish that run concurrent to the main title. The ones noted as co-writes above feature issues from multiple titles under the GL banner. Something like "Blackest Night" I'd strongly suggest picking up the main miniseries if you're going to be reading the GL tie-in title, whereas "Brightest Day" doesn't really require it.
The "0" issue you mentioned didn't come out until after issue 12 of the New 52 GL book, so I wouldn't worry about getting it yet.

Here's a great comprehensive site for intended reading orders by issue and trade: http://readingorders.com/GreenLantern/Complete/1

Like the thread idea!

I've been 100% on board GL since Geoff Johns took over and see no reason to leave just because he is making his exit...yet. I hope the creative teams on the GL family of books remains high quality because I'm buying GL, GLC and Red Lanterns every month. It'd be a real shame for something like RL to get cancelled due to a sudden creative team shift.

But I think it is a good time for Johns to be making his exit. I love the guy and have known him for years, but this "Third Army" storyline was something of a downer for me and creatively, I think it was his most lackluster mega-crossover. It just feels like the timing is perfect, since his run has more or less been one of incredible ideas and fantastic tales...why end on a downer?

Can't wait to see who is coming onto the books!

Thanks MykeHavoc for the info on other books GL books to check out. I actually went out to the comic store today and picked Green Lantern Corps: The New 52 #1 and Red Lanterns: The New 52 #1&2. Really excited to start reading the Red Lantern ones as I haven't checked them out before and don't know a whole lot about them. Just wish I could find Green Lantern: The New 52 #4 so I can find out what happens between Hal and Sinestro.

You sound a bigger fan of GL than I am. Nice to see another fan. I've always been more partial to Green Lantern than say Batman and Superman. I just recently, though, started going back to reading the comics so you might have to suggest me some good ones as well.

No problem. If you're partial to floppies, that's up to your ability to track
down older issues, but the first six are collected in this trade:

Issue #0 is the introduction of Simon Baz, the new Muslim-American Green Lantern. Really good book, IMO

Won't be around much longer, as Baz goes with Johns to the new JLA book.

I havent read the Green Lantern Animated Series comic that goes along with the TV show, but I know some young ones who love it. Since the show is now being cancelled, does anyone know if the book will continue? Id hate to see something that gets the young kids into comics go away.

I didn't even know there was a comic based on the animated show. It would suck if it has to suffer the same fate the show did.

There is. Its literally called Green Lantern The Animated Series, which I find weird be cause the comic itself isn't "animated", just the show its based on.

Maybe I better be glad that I didn't know anything about this. That cover looks pretty awful and doesn't really entice me to want to read it.

Its more kid friendly stuff. I dont read it myself, but I know some kids who love it. Id just hate to see a book they love get canceled, especially since they are just starting to get into comics.

I can't compare the two since with my recent collection starting again I have not checked out Blackest Night, but I will say I've enjoyed the few issues I've read of the New 52. Just haven't continued because I cannot find issue #4 anywhere and I hate skipping around. I would also recommend the New 52 Green Lantern Corps as what I've read of that is really, really good too.

Blackest Night is a storyline. N52 is an umbrella title to the entirety of DC Comics' reboot of their entire line of books.

As some have already mentioned, the Green Lantern books were among the few DC titles that were hardly rebooted at all. The only change that I noticed was the cosmetic change of his uniform. So to answer your question, I'd say the N52, which mandates that the N52 universe has only existed for the past 5 to 6 years, allows Geoff Johns' to continue his universe-building work uninterrupted, easily referring back to events of Blackest Night, Secret Origin, and The Sinestro Corps Wars.

By comparison, Batman fans like me have to suspend a LOT of disbelieve that the Dark Knight managed to have three young Robins - Dick Grayson/Nightwing, Tim Drake/Red Robin, and Jason Todd/Red Hood - all in that first five years of the N52 Universe! Altho' fwiw DC has since attempted to retcon their first year's worth of Bat books by now claiming Tim Drake was called Red Robin when he was Batman's sidekick, but still, three Robins/young partners in five years!? What evs...

I love Johns' run on GL! I don't pick up GL monthly nor do I bother getting the GLC or Red Lanterns books. I started reading Geoff Johns' GL work in trade paperback form, starting with Rebirth while the monthly issues were probably in the middle of The Sinestro Corps War. Since then I've held off on buying single issues - except for the recent #0 - and devoured my Green Lantern adventures in collection editions.

Last week I finished Volume 2: The Revenge of Black Hand, so I'm caught up through the issue 12. I won't know what comes after, this Wrath of the First Lantern storyline, until my next books arrive from Amazon this October. They'll also have Johns' final GL story, and I don't really know at this point if I'm going to continue reading GL after he leaves.

I skimmed through the first few issues for Superman and GL (N52) and I liked everything I saw.... This is a good thing they rebooted it for new readers such as myself.

How many issues are out thus far for N52's Superman, Batman, GL, and GL Corps?

I think I might pick those ones up. Really liked what I read and saw from them. Don't know when I'll be able to read them since I'm doing Spawn right now and I should be done by 2014 but at least I'll have this stuff ready to go.
