If you have iOS or macOS, go to the App Store (not iTunes!) and try redeeming. If it's valid, you should get an error saying that the code needs to be redeemed in iTunes.

For those who still get the download later box, what version of iTunes are you using? |

Just to add to this: For Windows 7 (and maybe other versions of Windows), if you get errors during install of the old version of iTunes and had a newer install of iTunes previously installed, make sure to uninstall all instances of Apple software, especially the Install applications, then try installing the old version of iTunes again.

I have 12.4.3 and have been able to test codes fine. But as of yesterday I get an error and can't sign into my account. It says "We could not complete your iTunes store request. An unknown error occurred (-50)." I have Googled this and can't find a solution that works. One suggestion was uninstalling iTunes and then downloading it again but it still did the same thing. Anyone else here have this problem? Is there another version of iTunes that works now without burning the code?

I am getting the same message, with version 12.1.3.6 for Windows, which was working perfectly just a month or 2 ago. I only use iTunes to test codes.
I don't have a solution, but hopefully someone else does. I am going to contact iTunes and see if they can help with this. |

I will be very curious to find out what kind of answer you get from iTunes on that...
![]() I'd bet you won't get much from them since this is VERY MUCH an unsupported action... You will loose them the instant you tell them that you force-quit the program to stop it from redeeming. Apple doesn't want you to be able to 'test' codes, you are just supposed to redeem them. They will likely tell you that you can test them by trying to redeem them. If they are good, they will redeem, if not, you will get an error... To them, there is no other reason to 'test' them... |

The only way I can test codes is with the Mac App Store on a Mac running Catalina. I enter the code as if I am redeeming a gift card.
If the iTunes code is unused, I get a message asking me to redeem the code in iTunes. If the code has been used, I get a message saying that the code has been redeemed by another account. |
