So, which of Disney's Blu-Rays so far, has received a "new restoration" and which have been recycled from DVD?

Is the blurry scrubbed Aristocats considered a restoration?

my bet is that it is a a bit of both things - computer cleaning it up and the older versions not having the proper color. the best comparison i can use right now is Star Trek The Next Generation Look how much of a difference in colors we are getting on the bluray as opposed to the old vhs/dvds. I can see a similar thing happening here. just remember that until recently with all the HD stuff, not a huge amount of effort was put into the releases of these movies. sure, they did some work but how much did you need to put in to release it on vhs? even if they did restore it, there are much better techniques now that make it look better. Just check out the review here about the Casablanca bluray releases that are only a few years apart. some of that detail may have been designed to be subtle but because of how it was done, it jumped out in previous releases. it could also be partially that the computer is doing all the work but i would hope that Disney is smart enough to have someone going over it and making sure that the computer doesn't remove details that are supposed to be there. If they have enough money to buy Lucasfilm, they should have enough to hire a couple people for that.

Snow White
Bambi
dumbo
Sleeping Beauty
Pinocchio
Alice in Wonderland
The Aristocats

I might have missed some. I didn't put in the digital films as these aren't restored.

There is also The Great Mouse Detective but I'm not sure about that one. Chances are they reused the DVD restoration they did some years back.

1) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

- this is a first comparison for which I am changing the format. Up until now I have been uploading the original DVD screenshots and then the Blu-ray screenshots. from now on I will be uploading both the original screenshots and them same pictures blown up to 1080p. that way it will be much easier for you to compare the DVD and Blu-ray
- the screenshot from the Blu-ray with the stepmother holding the box is not badly captured.

Comparison Index:
DVD Platinum Edition (2001): DVD PE
DVD Platinum Edition (2001) [1080]: DVD PE (1080)
Blu-ray Diamond Edition: Blu-ray

------ DVD PE ---------- DVD PE (1080) -------- Blu-ray

Thanks again Lnds500! You...

Great idea of giving us the enlarged ones as well! Now I don't have to do the enlarging myself anymore!...

And regarding the comparison itself: I haven't looked through them all yet, but from the ones I have seen, the BD looks great, whereas the DVD looked really blurry. Happy to know that they've done a good job on this one!

Glad you liked them! They've done an amazing job with this one. It looks stunning a definite upgrade from the DVD.

They're not mucking up that aspect ratio, are they? There is some heavy cropping in the trailer.

I know... But I'm afraid that's exactly what we're going to get. There's once again far too much missing on the top and bottom, even though we do get something extra on the sides. I do not like it this way.

Of course the restoration as such looks pretty good: it's very clean and still perfectly sharp. It is however a bit too bright, causing some white crush.

All in all: if you still have the DVD, do not get rid of it.

And of course, Lnds500 thanks again!

Once again? Is there any films Disney have tried to horizontally enhance? I know they did it with Jungle Book DVD, but that was designed to allow for that, supposedly.

This discussion has been going on forever for all the titles between 1961 and 1981; all those titles were supposedly "designed" for Widescreen, even though they were made in Academy Ratio. The first of these, "101 Dalmatians", has always been presented in 1.33:1, whereas the others were shown in theaters in 1.75:1 most of the time. For Home Video they were first in 1.33:1, then some turned to 1.75:1 and now all, except "101 Dalmatians", are coming to Blu-ray in 1.66:1.

I think 1.66:1 is a good alternative for most of these titles, not too cramped but still "Widescreen", but some really do not go well with it. The first problematic transfer was "The Fox and the Hound", "The Aristocats" didn't please everyone either, and the third one now is "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh". This one is even more of a debate, as it is a combination of shorts that probably never were meant for Widescreen in the first place, so...

Thanks very much Freddy, I'm sorry that I'm mostly ignorant regarding this information. I can respect the "theatrical" presentation on some of these, however Pooh, being a compilation of films from various eras, doesn't look right.

I agree. For me the rule is simple:

- the Aspect Ratio that shows most of the character and/or object the scene is about is the one the animators had in mind when drawing it.

In this case, in almost all the scenes we lose parts of characters and gain parts of the surrounding. That's not how it should be, Disney!?...

Why doesn't Disney have the good sense to include both versions on these films? If they can provide two widescreen presentations of Brother Bear on DVD(Family Friendly Aspect Ratio 1.66:1; Original Theatrical Aspect Ratio 2.35:1), why not some of their more fondly remembered classics? I don't get it.

Cause they're lazy and care only about the masses. This would be the ideal solution and (for the record) I would buy both editions

I would agree with this otherwise, but why the exceptional respect for something like Brother Bear? Are there really Brother Bear aficionados who demanded it be presented with full integrity? Instead Disney falters on stone classics that several generations have grown up with. It's a weird disparity. Sorry, I know I'm spinning my wheels here, and there are no logical answers to these questions.

I don't know, this drives me crazy. That's why I'm clinging onto my LaserDiscs of The Jungle Book and Robin Hood.

I'm all in favor of the DisneyView side bars, they should just do that instead. Or at least give us both versions.

They only do DisneyView for their 4:3 films unfortunately. I'm not all that bothered by the aspect ratio to be fair, as long as there isn't too much of the sides or top gone, as long as characters don't disappear into the sides or top while talking, I'm fine.

I'd just like to add that not only has this thread been mentioned in the Disney reviews on this site, but other sites are also indirectly referring to it.

For a more technical look at the release, head over to Blu-ray.com, an excellent resource for such things. Their review has an interesting discussion on Disney's restoration work on the film and other classic titles.
