my bet is that it is a a bit of both things - computer cleaning it up and the older versions not having the proper color. the best comparison i can use right now is Star Trek The Next Generation Look how much of a difference in colors we are getting on the bluray as opposed to the old vhs/dvds. I can see a similar thing happening here. just remember that until recently with all the HD stuff, not a huge amount of effort was put into the releases of these movies. sure, they did some work but how much did you need to put in to release it on vhs? even if they did restore it, there are much better techniques now that make it look better. Just check out the review here about the Casablanca bluray releases that are only a few years apart. some of that detail may have been designed to be subtle but because of how it was done, it jumped out in previous releases. it could also be partially that the computer is doing all the work but i would hope that Disney is smart enough to have someone going over it and making sure that the computer doesn't remove details that are supposed to be there. If they have enough money to buy Lucasfilm, they should have enough to hire a couple people for that.

Bambi dumbo Sleeping Beauty Pinocchio Alice in Wonderland The Aristocats I might have missed some. I didn't put in the digital films as these aren't restored. There is also The Great Mouse Detective but I'm not sure about that one. Chances are they reused the DVD restoration they did some years back. |

1) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
- this is a first comparison for which I am changing the format. Up until now I have been uploading the original DVD screenshots and then the Blu-ray screenshots. from now on I will be uploading both the original screenshots and them same pictures blown up to 1080p. that way it will be much easier for you to compare the DVD and Blu-ray - the screenshot from the Blu-ray with the stepmother holding the box is not badly captured. Thanks again Lnds500! You...
![]() ![]() Great idea of giving us the enlarged ones as well! Now I don't have to do the enlarging myself anymore!... ![]() And regarding the comparison itself: I haven't looked through them all yet, but from the ones I have seen, the BD looks great, whereas the DVD looked really blurry. Happy to know that they've done a good job on this one! ![]() |

![]() Of course the restoration as such looks pretty good: it's very clean and still perfectly sharp. It is however a bit too bright, causing some white crush. All in all: if you still have the DVD, do not get rid of it. And of course, Lnds500 thanks again! ![]() |

Once again? Is there any films Disney have tried to horizontally enhance? I know they did it with Jungle Book DVD, but that was designed to allow for that, supposedly.

I think 1.66:1 is a good alternative for most of these titles, not too cramped but still "Widescreen", but some really do not go well with it. The first problematic transfer was "The Fox and the Hound", "The Aristocats" didn't please everyone either, and the third one now is "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh". This one is even more of a debate, as it is a combination of shorts that probably never were meant for Widescreen in the first place, so... |

Why doesn't Disney have the good sense to include both versions on these films? If they can provide two widescreen presentations of Brother Bear on DVD(Family Friendly Aspect Ratio 1.66:1; Original Theatrical Aspect Ratio 2.35:1), why not some of their more fondly remembered classics? I don't get it.

I would agree with this otherwise, but why the exceptional respect for something like Brother Bear? Are there really Brother Bear aficionados who demanded it be presented with full integrity? Instead Disney falters on stone classics that several generations have grown up with. It's a weird disparity. Sorry, I know I'm spinning my wheels here, and there are no logical answers to these questions.

![]() I'm all in favor of the DisneyView side bars, they should just do that instead. Or at least give us both versions. |

They only do DisneyView for their 4:3 films unfortunately. I'm not all that bothered by the aspect ratio to be fair, as long as there isn't too much of the sides or top gone, as long as characters don't disappear into the sides or top while talking, I'm fine.

I'd just like to add that not only has this thread been mentioned in the Disney reviews on this site, but other sites are also indirectly referring to it.
