20th Century Fox Alien: Covenant (2017)

Quote:
In talking to 20th Century Fox chief Tom Rothman, the trade reports that a "Prometheus" sequel will likely hit theaters in either 2014 or 2015. "Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right," Rothman said. "We can't rush it." Stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are signed on for sequels (as the only two characters who -- spoilers! -- lived), but writer Damon Lindelof might not be available (which frankly, may not be a bad thing; though the "Lost" writer conceptualizing the story wouldnt be so awful). There were questions whether Fox's "X-Men: First Class" was box-office-worthy enough to earn a sequel with only $353 million worldwide, but clearly that was enough in their estimation. Similarly, "Prometheus" only earned $302 million worldwide off a reported $150 million dollar budget and the film only grossed $125 million domestically, but the studio obviously sees further potential for its story.

Groovy. I really enjoyed Prometheus and I'd love to see a sequel. Supposed plot holes are the least of my concerns when I'm watching a film and I respect Ridley Scott's decision to explain as little as possible. It had its share of underdeveloped characters, but I thought it was fascinating from a story perspective, beautiful to look at and it had some memorable set-pieces, which is good enough for me.

Guys, Prometheus needs a sequel, it was concieved as a 2 part film, nothing less, with Accountant Producer Tom Rothman deciding they would see how part one did before financing part two. This news really has made my day, and there is no other film i am looking forward to aside from the Hobbit trilogy that matches up to this film, also because i feel this will be Scott's final science fiction film, as he will be 78 when he makes it.

If you go check the video of the Fox announcement in the Prometheus thread, you will see that it IS planned as a sequel, with both Fassbender and Rapace returning.

Fixed.

I would enjoy seeing more of this story, a sequel would be very interesting territory to explore.

I'm much more interested in the story the sequel has to tell, so can't wait.

This is good. Prometheus was visually stunning but a bit iffy in terms of the plot, which will likely improve in the absence of Damon Lindelof. Rapace and Fassbender were the best parts of the movie, so I want lots of both of them in the sequel.
[Show spoiler]What I don't really want is more screen time for the weird, drastically undersized engineers outside of their armor, but I suppose that if the script is better than Prometheus' it could be okay. They are obviously very important to the plot, but their appearance and actions in Prometheus didn't really do anything for me.

PROMETHEUS Sequel Targeted for 2014 or 2015 Release; Damon Lindelof May Not Return

It looks as if the Prometheus sequel is indeed moving forward. Anticipation for Ridley Scott’s Alien-esque sci-fi pic was at a fever pitch when the film hit theaters, but reaction was enthusiastically polarized. Some loved that Scott left many questions unanswered and tackled large ideas, while others were distracted by the script’s plot holes and ridiculously inept scientists. I fell somewhere in between, but I’d by lying if I said I wasn’t interested in seeing where Scott plans to go for the follow-up.

Fresh off the film’s healthy box office take (especially for an R-rated sci-fi movie), Fox has now revealed that they are actively moving forward with the Prometheus sequel, and screenwriter Damon Lindelof may not be returning this time around. Hit the jump for more.

In a feature over at THR that runs down this summer’s blockbusters by studio, Fox confirmed that Scott and the studio are “actively pushing ahead with a follow-up,” with an eye towards a 2014 or 2015 release. Moreover, Fox is talking to new writers about coming onboard to pen the sequel because Prometheus co-writer Lindelof may be unavailable. The Lost co-creator recently had to pass a rewrite job on World War Z over to Drew Goddard because he’s currently focused on writing and prepping his new TV series at HBO.

Scott has made no secret about the fact that he’s incredibly keen on making a sequel to Prometheus, and shortly after the pic opened I penned a rundown of what we knew about the follow-up so far. Scott had revealed that he knew exactly where the sequel would be going while he was making Prometheus:

Quote:
“I know where it’s going. I know that to keep [David] alive is essential and to keep [Elizabeth] alive is essential and to go where they came from, not where I came from, is essential.”
Both Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are contracted to return for the follow-up (which could easily become one of the best roadtrip movies ever), but there’s no word on whether any of the other characters would appear in flashbacks or whatnot. I would be genuinely interested to see Lindelof return to pen the sequel, but I understand he’s a busy guy and Scott wants to get moving on Prometheus 2 sooner rather than later. The scribe previously talked about his involvement/non-involvement with the follow-up:

Quote:
“If Ridley wants me to be involved in something, that would be hard to say no to. At the same time, I do feel like the movie might benefit from a fresh voice or a fresh take or a fresh thought. Sometimes the baton should be passed, if that’s what the story demands. I had [Prometheus] for the period of time that I was running the race, and if that story continues, it could actually benefit going into someone else’s able hand. Although, I feel like some of the iceberg below the water for any potential future movies in that storyline has already been constructed based on conversations that Ridley and I had about it.”
2014 seems a bit early, especially since Scott is developing a Blade Runner sequel that he’s high on directing as well. I assume 2015 is a more likely release date for Prometheus 2, and Fox president of production Emma Watts cautioned that they don’t want to rush things too quickly on the follow-up:

Quote:
“Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can’t rush it.”
It’s incredibly refreshing to see that Fox is interested in making sure that the film is ready before they stamp a firm release date on Prometheus 2, so hopefully the final product will be well worth the wait. For now, it sounds like we’ll definitely be following Fassbender and Rapace’s characters on their quest to find where the Engineers came from (the planet shown in Prometheus was not the home planet of the Engineers, nor the same planet visited in Alien), and I’m more than intrigued to see the end result.

For much more on what the possible follow-up could entail, including a possible answer to one of the major lingering questions in Prometheus—why did the Engineers target humanity for destruction?—click on over to our previous recap of Prometheus 2. Sound off in the comments with your thoughts on this sci-fi sequel, as I’m sure there are many.

I have been giving Fox a lot of credit recently for really giving a rats A about its projects, even if they don't blow off the doors of the box office.

It's a safe bet if this was a Disney project they would have abandoned it as a one off but I'm glad to see Fox come back. Good for them for doing things differently.

I agree, Fox is really stepping their game up. I'm shocked and proud at the same time. Between this, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, I'm glad to see franchises that may not necessarily have lit up the box office getting to continue. And it looks like A Good Day to Die Hard may even be rated R, which is a huge step for them, especially allowing Prometheus and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter to be this summer as well. They're really starting to understand and give a s**t about their films.

Great news! Better to get it done sooner rather than later. Ridley is getting up there in age.

The way that the director and the people around the project have been talking. Makes it sound like they're going back to the grittier, R rated Die Hard.
