Well, like you say Prometheus was 3D which would account for a large chunk of takings. Also while not a huge difference, Covenant was made for roughly 20 million less and there is no reason any other sequels could not be done even cheaper. Plus there is the fact that the marketing for Prometheus tried very hard to take it away from the alien franchise whereas Covenant has tried very hard to associate it with it. A lot of casual viewers maybe decided after Alien 3 (which is awesome btw) and Resurrection that they no longer care about the xenomorph. Prometheus promised something different.

Bottom line is we are only talking opening weekend here. It still has a long way to go and once its finally tally comes in and then home video sales I think it will do just fine for it very modest budget.

You guys are more optimistic than me.

I wonder if there is any chance the domestic tracking (30 million OW) is way off. But perhaps this is a discussion for the box-office threads.

Before all that he probably was punished enough by being turned into a zombie. Not something I'd wish on my worst enemy.

Lack of 3D can certainly be a factor, but not enough for these size drops, particularly considering many international markets have expanded in the last five years.

Tracking can always be wrong, but as of now it also seems to be tracking for a $30-35 million domestic opening, way below Promethus and also below AVP (actually adjust for inflation those two have very similar opening weekends according to box office mojo, and then when you account for 3D/IMAX on Prometheus and AVP likely selling more child tickets as the only PG-13 film, AVP seems to be oddly enough the most attended opening in the franchise).

Well I had the opportunity to watch it twice last weekend... add me to the list of those who enjoyed Prometheus.

Watched it on Friday and loved it, I had mixed feelings about
[Show spoiler]the creator of the Xenomorphs but that changed after a second viewing, I agree that the plot twist is telegraphed but it really doesn't change how effective it is (to me at least, a friend of mine hated it)

Highly recommend reviewing Prometheus before going into Covenant, i was impressed with the amount of call backs and references to it in Covenant.

Also recommend watching the two released prologue scenes if you haven't already, particularly the one that reveals what happened to David and Elizabeth Shaw.

Come on. David didn't create the xenomorph. This is not even a spoiler.

The xenomorph was already represented in a mural in Prometheus.

Just re-watched The Furious Gods: The Making of Prometheus. Makes me appreciate the film's design and ambition all the more. As much as I enjoyed Covenant and (probably) consider it the better film, I'm still disappointed that Ridley didn't follow through with his original vision.

I hope that when Covenant arrives on Blu-ray, it's accompanied by a revealing three-hour documentary, complete with an angry Noomi Rapace interview.

Alien³ is a masterpiece, so it's actually very easy for a sequel/prequel to be worse.

IMDb.com now lists Scott as the director of The Crossing. I thought someone else had done it.
