I'm always quite happy when people like a movie I didn't. I just don't get people not wanting people to enjoy something.

In fact, when I don't like something others do, I feel left out and rather jealous. It still bothers me that I can't get into Gladiator. Everyone seems to love that movie, and I think it's just mildly okay. It bums me out that I can't get into it. But the fact that other people like it so much overall makes me glad for them.

I saw Covenant yesterday and had mixed feelings about it. I came away thinking it was overall a bit better than Prometheus (which I liked a fair amount) though it came with higher highs and lower lows.

A few things I was disappointed with:

[Show spoiler]- all the bad horror movie tropes it fell into
- showing the beast too often, and in broad daylight
- that its horror movie ambitions were not great enough (If Alien was Texas Chain Saw Massacre in space, then Covenant seemed like it was settling for Halloween 5 or something like that
)

There were a bunch of issues, and pretty much all of them could have been solved at the script level, which is frustrating. I'm sure the studios are heavy-handed with movies like these, but sometimes the end results make it seem as though there are no professional screenwriters on hand to address basic issues.

That said, I was really into pretty much all of the sci-fi elements of it.

[Show spoiler]- really liked the new alien spores and the new-ish alien designs
- David's actions are super compelling and the possibilities for a sequel seem pretty vast at the moment
- Having 2 androids fight was actually an idea I had for my own Alien movie, which of course only exists in my head

Despite my complaints, I found Covenant mostly enjoyable and I'm definitely interested in seeing where it goes.

I didn't have a problem of seeing the xeno often. Theres been 6 others movies with it, so keeping it hidden doesn't really do much unlike the first Alien.

I'd rather have Aliens and spaceships than no aliens and no spaceships. Always a winning combo for me! Hey, little bit of advice: try and enjoy life, eh?

The amount of people complaining about others complaining about the movie is higher than the amount of people complaining about the movie itself.

You are kidding right? The theater I was in today was the smallest at the megaplex and it had maybe 15 of us in that thing. I rolled my eyes all the way through the thing and there were nothing but snickers and laughs.....not to mention all the cliche's that were just plain laughable [Show spoiler] were two of the worst. Scary? Tense? There was no buildup for anyone that I could see. All I saw in the theater is people shaking heads and laughing on the way out. This turkey has no redeeming value at all in my mind. Maybe it's because I expected so much more? I dunno but I think I would have enjoyed another idiotic film like Alien V Predator more. I had heard some bad things but when I read a review on Ebert's site and the review gave it four stars I thought maybe there was some hope. Nope...it started out as something that might be decent but after the first hour was over the film was already well on its way to a crash and burn ending.
That wasn't my experience at all. I was in a full theater at Universal City Walk last Sunday evening and the film hit all the right beats with the audience. Leaving the theater, I heard nothing but positive things and my mixed group of diehards and casual fans loved it.

There is no problem with the xeno, it's just only two films used the creature as effectively as they could. Alien 3's use of it was all good except for the rod puppet, but ever since then the films have been ineffective at making the xeno actually scary, including Covenant.

Then again, playing Isolation and spending countless hours having the damn thing hunt for you is probably the scariest I will ever get out of seeing it, excluding VR.

First off I got a great deal of the day from BB and bought Alien for $5 with pop art cover and got $7.50 movie cash.

Second I loved all of the Alien movies even 3 and 4 so I'm a fan. I thought Prometheus was also really good. Alien: Resurrection was excellent and for me was the third best film of the series.

Third: saw the new film today and thought it was very good. In the poll I gave it 3 stars. I'm an Alien fan and it's hard for me not to like it.

It's too much to expect that this movie would be in the same league as Alien and Aliens. They struck gold with those 2 films and there are really no surprises in Covenant.

Still...always love seeing the little critters go apesh!t.

I also liked Alien vs. Predator Requiem. This is what I thought Alien 5 was going to be about, Weyland finally manages to get the "assets" to earth and then the mayhem begins. Alien v Predator was basically a quickie B film but it could have been so much better.

I've read a few of the posts and people are discussing Prometheus and Covenant.

I liked Prometheus better than Covenant because it far enough removed from Alien but you could see it was an origin story. I also think the cast was better in Prometheus.

There's only so much you can now do with the Alien franchise, I think Ridley made a very high quality B flick.

As I said in my last post, maybe they could jump ahead and actually do Alien 5, Aliens on earth and do a better job than AvP Requiem.

I thought this scene was creepy with the sounds and the darkness of the engineer ship and imagining Shaw in that dark place with David.

I can't even keep track of which types of people are posting more in this thread now: the ones you just mentioned, the ones who loved it, the ones who hated it, or the ones who thought it was okay.

It's all getting rather meta.

I'm sure this has been mentioned a thousand times but I watched Alien last night and was reminded that the "engineer" in the chair was fossilized and had been there for thousands of years. Yet the aliens were made not long before that movie takes place? Wha?

Like I said, I'm sure others mentioned this a thousand times, but it was the first I thought of it since seeing Covenant.

Technically, that was the original impression of a few crew members. It was hardly a thorough scientific study of the ship in Alien.

Prometheus, imo, only exists to bring us David. Everything else about that movie and how it trounced the legacy of the xenomorph I have stubbornly forgotten. However in A:C, it feels like we are finally getting to Scotts point in making these prequels and David is finally living up to the marketing blitz he had before Prom came out. I did not expect that

I don't think whether something is fossilized or not is a subjective thing.

The timeframe of how it occurs can be altered depending on the circumstances.* Especially in science-fiction. "Advanced fossilizing occurred because of the space thingamajig factor." Problem solved.

* Real world example: the trees near Mt. St. Helens. Though technically not fossilized, they visually appear similar in many respects as to be mistaken for fossilized.

Don't even take that into account. Marketing is budgeted through a separate division/dept of the studios.

There needs to be two threads for each movie on this site. One for the fans and one for the ones who don't like it or haven't seen it and still don't like it. It's not even enjoyable to talk/post about movies we enjoy because we'll get attacked by trolls non-stop. If they don't like movies,.. they shouldn't be on this movie site. This webpage is for people who enjoy movies.

Change the word hate to love and it sums up this forum lol

Acceptance will take you to a happier place People have different opinions and have every right to express themselves on a board dedicated to a movie. If there weren't dissenting opinions, how long would the discussion last?

That film was great

Yes, it was

Can't wait to see it again

Hello

Anyone there?

Got to love the keyboard warriors lol. Strength in numbers, only then will we prevail. There is no opinion other than mine and I will shout you down until you agree. Sad. Becoming juvenile about things is where the conversation ends. Try objectivity, it works wonders in a debate. Keep filling in those script gaps and plot holes, the film you wanted is out there, somewhere. Out!
