if you'd like, look at the screenshots from the VHS posted by Freddy (in the spoiler), which are less bright and washed out than the Laserdisc. (that is only due to the transfer) The issue is a radical change of colors and a whole new color palette! From a white-pink sky originally to an orange-yellow in the BLurays (and DVD), making the bright morning look like a late afternoon. If you first saw Beauty and the Beast on DVD, or if it's not one of your favourite films, of course you won't mind. (i wouldn't mind eg. if they changed the colors in "Adventures of Winnie the pooh". But because it is my favourite film of al time, and i saw it first at the cinema, saw the TV documentaries before that, collected screenshots from magazines etc, and then saw it on VHS and know it by heart, I do mind a lot with such radical changes! Keep in mind you're going from the limited NTSC color gamut to REC709 HD. Colors can look strikingly different and truer to the original source. So unless you have some direct CAPS-source to compare can we be sure that the BD isn't what it's supposed to be? There are all sorts of movies on LD that were horribly wrong in both color timing, gamma, and other things that weren't fixed until the DVD or BD versions came out, but people protested the change because it wasn't what they were used to all these years.

Not saying anything, just keeping the facts straight: my screenshots are from a PAL VHS. The LD could be NTSC, but it could also be PAL. I don't know.

36) Mulan (1998)
- This might be the sharpest-looking CAPS film I've seen. I may be mistaken, but the line-art is incredibly defined and detailed. - Colours remain the same - The are slight hints of aliasing in the ghosts' scene (check the screenshot). It must be a source issue cause not all of them have it. - Video quality gets a 4,5/5 from me ![]() Comparison Index: DVD Special Edition (2004): DVD SE DVD Special Edition (2004) [1080]: DVD SE (1080) Blu-ray 15 Anniversary edition (US): Blu-ray ------- DVD SE ---------- DVD SE (1080) ------- Blu-ray ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Define "correct". It's the ratio the film was animated in and it's the best ratio we've gotten in home video (picture-quantity-wise). We don't know if there is more picture than that to fill the gaps to the sides. I'm just glad they didn't crop this one as well and we get to see more of the frame.

Nice to see the original 1:66:1 aspect ratio and it'll be nice to see the blue castle logo (although not blue) again. With Disney's recent track record, I was afraid that both would be altered (to the 1:75:1 aspect ratio and the current CGI castle), as they did with Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King.

31) Aladdin (1992)
- The aspect ratio should be close to 1,85:1 on Blu-ray. The picture has tiny black bars on the sides - The DVD has more image on top and bottom - The Blu-ray has more image to the sides. Thanks again for the comparison Lnds500!
![]() But I'm not that sure about this release: - first, those tiny black bars on the sides simply indicate an error; they should not be there; - second, a whole lot more picture is lost from the top and bottom than there is gained on the sides. And for what reason?... More black on the top and bottom that should not be there; - and finally, there are serious edge enhancement issues around all the character lines. What a shame, because color, contrast and especially sharpness are excellent! |

The bluray of Aladdin has some edge enhancement, fading lines, soft lines, and aliasing around Iago's eye, and just noticed banding on the jewel of Jafar's headpiece (on the screenshot with him
[Show spoiler] . Shame, Aladdin is one of the best looking movies ![]() |
