Default I think it's a bug in the new TV.app

I think this is an issue/biug with the new TV app. If I go into the TV.app and then "Library" and select 4K HDR, a lot of movies that I know I own in 4K do not show up. However, if I goto the "iTunes Movies" app on Apple TV, and select them, they show as 4K. Also, playing a movie I know I own in 4K, shows 4K & Dolby Vision logos when I look at the info while it's playing. I think everyone still has the 4K movies, they're just not showing up under the 4K section of our "Library" in the TV.app.

Edit: Or... Given the post above, I just happen to check this out as everything is starting to be restored.

If I’ve learned anything today, if you want these 4K-> HD screwups resolved quickly— get Macrumors or 9to5Mac to post an article about it.

Somebody over at Apple must keep their eyes there as this all got resolved within minutes/ hours after it was reported .

I wonder if it was that or their maintenance/whatever just happened to be over. I mean either way, good on those sites for shining a light on it. Apple should be more transparent about this stuff.

Maybe we can get them to tell them to fix this horrible new TV app - they took off the counts of the 4K & HDR movies - wondering if it's so we don't notice when our titles lose 4K status.

Is there any rhyme or reason to when this happens, and what titles get the axe? Personally I don't think it's fair to take away something we already had, and I'm eternally bitter towards iTunes for not upgrading titles we previously bought in SD before 4K was ever a thing, even if we paid more than HD costs now.

Why would Apple upgrade your SD purchases for nothing?
Even now there’s still an option to buy SD or HD/4K, the only reason the HD to 4K free upgrades and 4K at HD prices come about was because apparently the studios won’t allow 4K downloads so Apple argued that if that’s the case then they should only charge for 4K the price for the highest quality that we can download being HD.
A compromise was agree by all but Disney.

There's absolutely nothing reliable about digital - not in playback or ownership. Never assume it will always be available in the quality you want, at your fingertips. If you want that, stick with discs.

Yeah but discs take up space (a lot of it) and they go bad (BR much more so than DVD). Plus, it is much more convenient to just select a movie title with my iPad than to have to go dig out the disc each time. iTunes is definitely my preferred format these days.

There's nothing reliable about anything if you want to really challenge the concept of 'ownership.' It's arbitrary to say physical media is somehow a superior standard of possession because that's not necessarily the case; truth be told you cannot count of retaining anything beyond a certain time and that's ok because not everything has to be forever. The hoarder mentality some people, myself included, have about amassing and keeping video store caliber libraries with media is an unhealthy false distortion of reality.

My line of discussion here is, of course, obnoxiously inappropriate; as inappropriate as posting about how awesome physical media is in the digital threads.

How many movies do you have that you need to go "digging?" I have hundreds and they all fit in one compact wall, in alphabetical order. No archaeology involved.
I'd much rather have uncompressed sound and better video compression than dealing with the "convenience" of digital. It's there as a back-up for me. Nothing more.
And also, I've never had a disc fail on me (knock on wood) so that hasn't been a concern as of yet. It is rather ridiculous how often things are removed from digital services, though. I like the fact that Vudu never removes anything, in my experience.

Ah but how many discs have you bought where further down the line there’s been a remastered release or a new addition with a added Directors Cut and loads of special features that update the edition you’ve already got on your shelf at no extra cost?

While I like the potential of the new TV app and will be using it going forward instead of the separate Movies and TV Shows apps, I think there’s a lot to improve on. This includes quite a few errors with the new icons for movies/TV shows.

A small fraction of examples:

-Fantastic Four (2005) has the latest film as its icon
-All-Star Superman/Bonfire of the Vanities have foreign equivalent icons
-Dark Knight Returns (Deluxe) has the Part 1 icon
-Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone has the US title icon
-Hobbit 1 & 2, LOTR 2 extended editions have theatrical icons

Here’s hoping these and the other errors are corrected over time.

The count under my avatar is accurate (I originally signed up for this site specifically to catalog my movies).

I don't believe I've ever had a DVD fail but I have lost a number of BRs already - not from rough handling either.

I find iTunes quality to be excellent. I'm watching on an 82" LCD with the sound to an older but quite capable 6.1 system

Don't Clegane yourself over this. Apple's upgrade program is more than anyone else is offering.
