Default Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)

Quote:

A new Resident Evil movie is in development from Johannes Roberts, the director of 47 Meters Down and its sequel, and The Strangers: Prey at Night.

The subject of the new Resident Evil movie came up when we asked Roberts directly about the director credit for the upcoming reboot at the top of his IMDb page, and what he could tell us about the current stage of production. In addition to stating it would be a film rather than a series, he stated:

“We are in active development of that at the moment. I pitched them a take, and they really loved it. So, we are just gearing up on that as we speak, really. I’m in the office all the time there. So, yeah, it’s great. It’s gonna be super scary. It’s super, super scary. And it’s just getting back to the roots of the game. I think, at the moment, I’m not really allowed to say much more than that. But it’s gonna be a lot of fun.”

Based on this guy's previous works it looks like this isn't going to be any classier than the previous RES films. Whether it's a good or bad thing is to be seen.

I didn't like 47 Meters Down or The Strangers: Prey at Night so I have very little hope for this one. The other 6 RE movies I at least found enjoyable as mindless zombie/action movies.

I've played eight Resident Evil games, but have never watched any of the movies. It's so weird to me that they are rated so low by IMDB users yet make so much money.

I just don't get it. They HAD Romero ready to go. A faithful adaption of the first game. Ready to go. They drop him for the Paul WS Anderson crap. Now there's another chance and its this doofus?

I haven't seen the new 47 Meters yet, but wasn't a big fan of the first. I did love The Strangers: Prey At Night though. I'd give this reboot a chance. Might be fun. Can't be any worse than most of the other Resident Evil movies.

If this guy really gets to do it, it will be worse.

And the same thing happened with this reboot. I believe they initially had James Wan, the current-day horror guru, tabbed to direct, but they dropped him for this guy.

He’s still attached as a producer, though, so maybe, just maybe it won’t suck and/or deviate from the games too much?

Thumbs down

It seems like the series just ended. And they're rebooting it already?

Well, yeah, they made money.

Hopefully now they'll actually make a horror film this time, though Johannes Roberts doesn't instill a lot of confidence.

If they **** this up again then I just don't know. Easiest thing in the world to get right. Just make the movie version of the first game. Train set piece followed by characters trapped in the mansion slowly realising what's going on and fighting to survive.

So simple.

I'll give this film a chance this weekend most likely, in theaters. Hopefully it's entertaining. That's all I can hope for, and that it resembles Resident Evil in some ways more than Paul WS Anderson's action movie versions, which missed most of the horror tone of the games big time.

I prefer the cheese from the game itself.

Prey at Night is absolutely killer, no idea what you chumps are on about.

The words "Resident Evil" and "classy" don't belong with one another at all. That's just not what the franchise is about, never has been, never will be. Even the well-liked franchise entries - RE1 remake, RE4, RE7 and both versions of RE2, for example - are filled with tonnes of insane cheese. Don't get me wrong, I love them, by why anyone ever thinks that a Resi film adaptation is deserving of some horror maestro or something is completely beyond me. They deserve better than the Anderson trash, certainly, but that doesn't mean they suddenly deserve some high-tier immaculate piece of cinema, either.

Silent Hill, maybe, but not Resi.
