They’re running into the same problem Marvel did, which is their ensemble all-star “family” keeps getting bigger and bigger with every film and the regular players salaries keep going up and up. This takes up probably more than $100 million of the budget on its own. Just imagine if Dwayne Johnson was still in these things…

I wonder how much of that was spent on time/portal/space travel and/or whatever outlandish sci-fi shit they plan to put in this time around, it’s reached self-parody levels at this point.

It also needs in the ballpark of $850m to break even after marketing and that might be a low estimate. Good luck with that after F9, which wasn’t well-received and barely turned a profit at a 70% lower budget.

I don't think this one is going to hit $1B. The last one did like $750m and you can blame COVID, but I think it was probably the worst movie in the series and probably did a lot to hurt the franchise.

They should have stopped at the 7th. Story wise there was no real reason to continue after that. I'm also surprised that Vin Diesel hasn't tried to CGI Paul Walker back in these movies.

I’m sure they will in the last one. I’m just not sure if it will be at the very end at the “family” bbq or if they’ll actually have him be in action scenes with the crew.

The title sounds like the name of a window-cleaner.

No, not Robin Askwith.

To be fair F9 came out in early 2021, we weren't completely out of the woods with Covid at the time. F9 was also the first sign of life at the box office since the theater shut downs.

So it needs to break like $900m to make a profit? It will probably be able to do that. Last one made like high $700m during COVID.

Oh I know. I guess why work out when you can have some visual effects artists spend endless hours (and the studio spending tens of millions) making you look good?

Wow, and they say adding practical blood in favor of cheap-looking CGI blood is too expensive.

But apparently Universal is willing to spend tens of millions on CGI muscles for Vin to spare him the trouble of customary workouts (because it worked so well for Cavill’s Josstice League mustache, right?). Studio execs these days.

I believe it was just confirmed Avatar 2 cost $400 mil, so they're pretty far off from the record at this point.

I think the highest production budget is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stanger Tides at $410m.

Which mystifies me. Doesn’t look it. I think it came to $370-something after tax write offs.

Isn't that for 2 and 3 which were shot simultaneously ?

Marvel's grosses also kept getting bigger and bigger as the movies went one (phase 4 notwithstanding).

The problem with F&F is that it peaked with 7 and now they're in diminishing returns territory. Universal kinda missed the boat with this epic 2-part finale, it really should've happened like 2 movies ago but greed got in the way.

So now instead of reaping the benefits like Marvel did with Endgame, they're praying just to break even.

Oh I'm not sure, the headlines I saw just mentioned Avatar 2 specifically, and an article I read the other day mentioned they needed to bring in more than a bil on Avatar 2 alone to turn a profit. Perhaps I got my info twisted?
