'Knives Out' Sequel in the Works, Story Centered on Daniel Craig's Detective Character



As Knives Out concludes yet another strong weekend at the box office, writer-director Rian Johnson is already working on a follow-up to his hit original whodunit, lining up a potential franchise for Lionsgate.

Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter at Lionsgate's pre-Golden Globes party on Saturday night that he was already developing a sequel centered on Craig's Southern detective Benoit Blanc investigating a new case. He added that he was eager to make the film quickly, ideally in the next year.

Johnson's producing partner Ram Bergman added that Craig was eager to reprise the role. "Daniel had so much fun doing it, and he wants to do more," he said.

Lionsgate and MRC's Knives Out, made for a reported $40 million and boasting a star-studded cast including Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer and Toni Collette, became a shining beacon for original films in a 2019 box office dominated by sequels and franchises. It is up for three Golden Globe awards on Sunday - best comedy/musical picture and best comedy/musical actor and actress for Craig and co-star Ana de Armas. Lionsgate has not officially greenlit a Knives Out sequel, but given the film's $247 million haul worldwide, the film could be the beginning of a lucrative franchise for the studio and for Craig as he wraps up his stint as James Bond in the upcoming No Time to Die. Lionsgate film president Joe Drake told THR at Saturday's party that he's eager to read a script.

Johnson, who directed 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is also developing a new Star Wars trilogy, but the plans have slowed down as Disney and Lucasfilm figure out the next steps in the franchise following December's The Rise of Skywalker concluding the saga that began with 1977's A New Hope.

Love it! I thought the first one was super good and Daniel Craig's character was great
Seems like the only way a sequel would work would be to follow his character.

I've heard so many good things about the first one, and I absolutely loved the trailer and love the cast. I doubt I'll get to see it in the theater given how many really big films I still need. But windows are getting shorter and shorter from theatrical release to streaming/disc/whatever. It shouldn't be too long.

And yeah, it's difficult to imagine that a movie that has made about 5x its production budget wouldn't get a sequel in this day and age.

I would normally say this was a one and done...go out on a high note. However Craig was fantastic in Knives Out and I want to see more of that character so bring it on.

As I said, I haven't seen it yet so I only have the trailer to go on. But Craig, and everyone really, looks fantastic. Then again, I'm basically always in the mood for more Daniel Craig.

Everyone does a great job. You can tell the entire cast had a blast making Knives Out. Overall though Craig stole the scenes he was in. Next best most enjoyable to watch was Ana de Armas. You’ll enjoy it when you see it.

I'm more curious about who will be cast alongside Daniel Craig this time. I wouldn't mind if Rian Johson picked a few of his favorite actors from The Last Jedi.

Probably not. If you didn't like the story, plot and other actors which are going to be in this next one then you probably won't like it. The story is more than just Craig. Craig was fine but not the only good thing about the movie. People one again overblowing a performance from one actor.

Why would the rest be in the sequel? If it’s a movie centered on Craig’s character the rest don’t need to be in it. Story wise that mystery was solved.

Watch Rian choose Kelly Marie Tran, Adam Driver or Daisy Ridley for the sequel (I hope).

I said the movie will have other cast members besides Craig like the first movie did. So if you didn't like anything or one from the first movie besides Craig then he probably won't like this movie either. Craig was not the only thing good about the first movie.
