Tokyo Joe ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Both of these were produced by Bogart's own company, Santana Pictures Corporation, and seemed to be trying to recapture the lightning in a bottle he had with Casablanca. Lots of familiar tropes in all three films: US expat with dubious past living in a foreign land; black market connections; trench coat and fedora as a uniform; military occupying force is in charge; needs a special pass or permit to move the plot along; several more I'm sure.

Tokyo Joe also has the distinction of the first US film approved for filming in Japan after WWII. Second unit footage was shot with a Bogart double in long shots and also rear projection footage for use back in the studio.

Birth of a Nation (1915)

This was the most nauseating film I've seen... ever. It is full of such repulsive racism that I could hardly watch the last half.

I had imagined something like Gone With the Wind with the racism dial turned up a bit, but this was physically difficult to watch. Yeah yeah, it was innovative and a turning point in cinema, but watch Cabiria or something instead.

Terje Vigen (A Man There Was) (1917)

A Swedish adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's poem Terje Vigen, about a fisherman who breaks the British blockade of Norway during the Napoleonic wars. A very good movie, I really liked that they used the poem for the intertitles. It might be difficult to understand for those who are not familiar with it.

The start of the golden age of Swedish silent cinema.

I enjoyed my rewatch of the first three in the series so I went ahead and caught the next three sequels. I feel kind of sad putting away all my horror movies, maybe I'll watch these again once more this month before I start on Christmas movies.

1985:

Ahh, the 80's! Lots of great action films to choose from. This one has cool stunts, fast car chases, lots of explosions, humor, heart, a moral, a quintessential 80's robot, and Chuck Norris kicking butt! It's also interesting that this film's subplot is the basis for its title and directly plays into the main plot. This is a good one.

Code of Silence: ⭐⭐⭐½

2002:

I wanted to watch everything in sequential order this month, but this one played in select theaters yesterday for Godzilla Day so I had to break the chain early. Not nearly as poignant as the 1954 film, of course, but it had its moments and it was good, giant-monster-battling fun!

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla: ⭐⭐⭐½

1986:

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to give this movie its own post. Had I watched this before doing my 2022 Recommendations, this movie would definitely have been on the list. It is one of the best martial arts movies I've ever seen. It has outstanding stunts, incredible fights, great characters, thoughtful dialogue, unexpected surprises, and is just awesome all around. There are different cuts of the movie available but the original cut, the only I've seen so far, is top notch. Thank you Vinegar Syndrome for releasing this!

Also funny observations: some of the stunt people are obviously stunt doubles, but who cares when the stunts themselves are so cool! Also, I thought I recognized the kid in the movie and looked it up. Yep, it's Louis Fan Siu-wong, the lead in The Story of Ricky, which is fun. That movie is nothing like this one, though.

Righting Wrongs: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

tick, tick...BOOM (2021)

Interesting biopic about Jonathan Larson the composer of Rent and a couple others, I believe. I love Musicals on the stage. I never got around to seeing it. Maybe I will some day. Thank you filmbuffTX for this great suggestion.

Another 80's action flick, this one wasn't anything special, but it was still fun. The good guys are all good-natured, have forced but still believable chemistry, and crack jokes throughout. The lead actress is the hand-to-hand combat specialist, while her partner uses guns and grenades. I definitely enjoyed it more than the reviewer on this site.
