Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (first-time viewing)



This was tailor made for my enjoyment. I grew up on Weird Al and Harry Potter, so to see Harry Potter playing Weird Al in this absolutely hysterical genre send up was fantastic. I felt a big kinship with UHF for obvious reasons, and I can see myself doing a double feature in the very near future.

Flash Gordon (1980) -

Bought this on 4k recently and thought I'd give it a go, a favourite of my Mum's when she was a kid.

This was terrific. I realise that I had totally misunderstood what this film was about, or how the story unfolded...I genuinely thought Flash was some high school football player and that he got special powers along the way. Nope! Just a regular adult professional football player! His power is the human spirit, which absolutely rules. I was also taken aback by just how quickly the story gets going; it moves like a bullet train, 5 minutes in and we're basically into the meat of it all. I didn't mind that, but it did get a bit exhausting towards the middle as a result. I won't say it's an issue, but I do love just how quickly these human characters got accustomed to being on another planet.

This was such a great time though. I love the atmosphere, set/production design, the special effects....all of it looks great, and especially on the 4k disc. I definitely see myself coming back to this one.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022) - 1/2

I grew up with Weird Al's music, so I was really looking forward to this and the direction it was taking. Making a parody of musician biopics, about the guy who makes parodies of musician's songs, was the perfect way to do this.

It takes no part of his life seriously and it's a laugh riot. Lost me a bit after the first hour but picked up again by the ending. Daniel Radcliffe is terrific, as is Evan Rachel Wood and the all of the cameos.
