Hey team,. I can't get subtitle files to work with video files from a hard drive. Ive got a folder called 'Movie', with a 'sub' folder inside it with the subtitle but it just won't recognize it? Am I doing the file layout wrong? I've also just tried putting the video and subtitle file alone in their own folder too..?

Are both the video and subtitle filenames the same - with the extension being the only difference?
I've seen it where they have to be.

Thanks, yes they need to have the same file name. I thought they needed to be in a Sub folder, but that turns out to be the case for using external subs for disc playback. Thanks Peter.

On my old 2016 OPPO UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player, I just watched another triple layer 100GB disc that came out in the year 2017 from Sony Pictures. The movie played flawlessly including several reverse scans. No problems at all. Sony knows how to make good quality 100GB 4K Blu-ray discs.

So there wasn’t a problem with early 100GB discs then. Who knew?

My OPPO is from '16 as well. I'm not sure I would call it old though. It went back to OPPO for an oil change last year and has been flawless ever since.

Lately I've been having problems with various 4K Blu-ray movies. On my Fast and the Furious, Indy sets, and just today tried Mission Impossible: Fallout I've all had issues with. Fallout couldn't get past the menu. Is the player starting to go bad? Firmware is up to date. Mine's a '16 player as well. Thoughts on where to go from here?

The drive may be at the beginning stages of failure.

That's what I was afraid of. What's weird is on the Fast and the Furious set I replaced them with other versions and those have played fine. A lot of my other movies/shows play fine as well. But then I tried 2 Indy sets and (on both) had issues with Doom and Crusade. Maybe it's time to get a new player?

My family members and I have several OPPO UDP-203 Blu-ray players that were purchased back in December of 2016. Not once so far in almost 5 years has the players needed to be serviced. I might have over 20,000 hours on my personal player.

I am sorry to hear some people are having problems. I am using the latest firmware update released long ago, and no playback issues. Sometimes people need to clean a optical disc with fingerprints and very small amount of dust on the disc to fix the issue. The advantage of having more then one 4K Blu-ray player like a OPPO and Sony, is that if both players have problems with the disc, the disc is defective and needs to be exchanged.

Last I had checked, Oppo still offered repair service on their players for a flat fee. Contact form here:

Thanks for posting this. Was about to look for it. I'm thinking about having mine serviced before I move later this year. I'll have a new theater room, and I want my 203 to outlive me (or at least give me a good run)!

They are so very good about repairs. Sent in both my 983 dvd player and 83 to fix sticking trays and both are now in perfect working condition again. Flat fee for both.

Bought a Sony UBP-X800M2 just to test out the disc's that won't work on my Oppo 203 and it played Mission Impossible: Fallout just fine today. Gonna try Doom and Crusade tomorrow which I'm sure will play fine. I'll return the Sony on Friday, so whoever gets that refurb'd will get a great deal haha. Been in contact with Oppo's support today and their suggestions haven't been helpful so far. I'll have to see about getting it serviced and hopefully that fixes the issue I'm having.

Why not just keep the X800M2 as a backup or main player if your Oppo 203 is acting up? Did you try clearing the the persistent storage on your Oppo to see if that helps?

Just tried a factory reset and the Oppo still wouldn't play Falllout from the start. Is there something else I need to do for the persistent storage? Just watched Doom and Crusade today (double feature!) on the X800M2 and those played just fine so it's def the Oppo right? Found out what their out of service repair is. $109 (not bad) that includes shipping back to you, you have to pay to ship it out to them. Think it's worth it? I'm torn now. With shipping it'll prob cost $150 or so that can be used to another player. Put it up on eBay and see if I can get anything for the Oppo?

Reading this thread, I'm just glad Oppo support is still "out there" as an option -- even though I've never personally needed it. I currently have two beloved Oppos in my home theater -- the 203 (from 2018) for all UHDs and my elite collection of 150 "Top Tier" BDs; and my BDP-83 (from 2010) for my "Second Tier / Guilty Pleasure" BDs and my last four remaining DVDs. I've had a near-zero incidence list of glitches or problems with either player so far -- knock on wood -- and even though I was having some "tray sticking" issues with the 83 five or six years ago, I solved it by using the "eject" button on the remote control and keeping a CD of Pink Floyd's "A Collection of Great Dance Songs" in the tray whenever I'm not spinning a movie. No kidding; no issues with it since.

I don't want to stray into absurd hyperbole or come across as a crazy Oppo fanboy... which I probably am... but I'm VERY attached to these players, lol. The day Oppo shuts its doors on support will be a dark day indeed. It'll be like having a life insurance policy lapse. I really hope when they eventually do announce they're closing up shop, it will be with enough lead time to think about whether I want to send in my players for preventative maintenance.

That's a tough call. Approx $150 for the shipping/service is about half the cost of the X800M2, isn't it? Probably better to move that to your primary player. If the Oppo works with everything else you've played on it, you could hang on to it for a backup for a while. If a firmware update magically fixes the issues, then you could swap them again and make the Sony a backup. It's up to you.

So far, my 203 still won't play the new Willy Wonka UHD without the audio being out of sync, but that's the only issue. Not ready to buy a new player over just one disc (especially since my PS5 plays the disc just fine). Now, if I end up in your shoes, then yeah I'd probably get another player.

It's a tough call man and I was in your same shoes about a year ago. My drive started going bad and I thought it was a disc issue because the player had low hours and it's a top of the line player. My Samsung Bd player from 2008 still plays discs fine so I was a bit surprised my OPPO failed so soon. I decided to send it in for service, but got the player back in record time and it's been good ever since.

As steel_breeze mentioned....it's going to be a sad day when we can no longer get these players serviced. I still spin Laserdiscs and it's so difficult to find parts these days and nobody services players anymore except a maybe 3 people known to the LD community.
