Sorry to hear Navster. I'm wondering if I have one myself. My left ear has been ringing for 4 months. I have no numbness though. My doctor couldn't find any damage to mid ear, and wanted me to try some nasal spray for a few weeks to see if i had inner ear fluid build up. Hasn't helped, and I haven't made a follow up appoitment yet.

I don't know much about the benign tumors, but just remember to stay positive and keep all those good vibes around you.

One of my students actually was out last term for cancer on his brain stem and after multiple procedures he is back and doing rather ridiculously well. I had asked him last week how he was and he said he was doing great and that part of the speedy recovery was all the support and love he received from everyone.

So, I am sure I speak for a lot of us when I say that we are sending you all our love and support for a quick recovery.

Please get it looked at, ask your doctor to get referrel to a neurologist and they will send you for an mri.... I experienced on and off head aches for a while now, then numbness to the left side of my face, Then the ringing to my left ear. Better safe then sorry!

Sad part is I had to push my doctor for the nuerologist referral, said I'll be fine and take aspirin .. He is no longer my doctor

Any md should have ordered an MRI for you after other tests and meds didn't improve your condition. Your old doctor might have been pressed by your insurance to not give many referrals or costly tests. Unfortunately its the insurance companies that choose what md's can do and some md's either want their 'bonus' or are over their limit with some insurance companies that they become restricted as to not lose on the patients from it. Your doctor IMO was probably just following the protocols from your insurance company before giving out a referral, yes it fells like your doctor is not hearing you, but he probably was, but needed to take care of all variables beforehand. Emergency Room doctors have more wiggle room and would have probably done at least a CT scan on you.

I hate with a passion insurance companies, there should only be one gov issued one for everyone because current ones are for profit and not for service and things will keep getting worse. I for one have an insurance where I can go to whatever specialist I want without referrals, its much better than having a GP for your referrals because of insurance lockdowns. Doctors in 2015 are earning muchhhh less than the old ones and have higher costs and loans to pay. The only people benefiting from healthcare are insurance heads, pharmaceutical companies, and some labs.

An acoustic neuroma is a classic board question, but in reality is not common and slow growing so most doctors take other steps before proceeding to an MRI (which is costly) or a neurologist. Manyyyy people have ear/stability/noises/issues as they age and veryyyyy few have a tumor. There are a few test one performs before considering an MRI due to the nature and probability of a tumor.

Hope the operation is without complications! Best of Luck, C

I feel your pain on the neurologist referral. My doctor pretty much doesn't want to do anything about my neuro issues or pain. He says that I'm too young to be experiencing anything like that and it may be "all in my head." The staff at the emergency room would gladly tell him otherwise. I have no clue why he wouldn't at least refer me to a neurologist. I'm lucky that my current insurance covers 100% of just about everything if I have a referral, including specialist visits.

Still trying to figure out what to do about my whole situation, as it just eats away at my health and as it is, my long-term health picture isn't very good...

Quick update, met with my surgeon and we are in fact doing surgery, and they want to move it along quick, just waiting for the proper referrals and authorizations. They said my surgery will be in 2-4 weeks

In order to access the tumor, they have to remove 3 inches off my skull behind my left ear .. With a recovery time of about 2-3 months, but I'll be as good as new and tumor free

Will keep you guys updated, and again thanks for all the support, you guys have no idea what it means

I asked my cousin about this one(he is a doctor specializing in the abdominal region with end stage cancers his primary practice). He helped on one in med school...

According to him(keeping in mind...he's a doctor)...

"Any decent NS can do this with their eyes closed and one arm tied behind their back..."

Other words...one of the easiest procedures they face.

NS aren't the only ones that do it. ENT with surgical residency can also do it.

For an ENT surgeon this is the most difficult surgery they would do. Many ENT would pass it to a NS anyway, rather than refer to an ENT surgeon.

Big day today guys, heading over to UCSF shortly to meet the surgeon who is actually doing my surgery, hopefully I get a surgery date too!

It took almost 3 weeks for all the insurance referrals and approvals to come through but I'm excited for the next step and getting this damn thing out of my head

Will update later today

Do you have short term disability insurance for this as well?

2-3 months at home(not always at home) is killer to finances...

Surgeon said surgery is most likely Nov 25th, which is the day before thanksgiving, either that or I wait until early Dec, which I can't. So hopefully that day works out...

They also said if all goes well I can be home in 2 days after surgery
